We dug into the mystery surrounding Mitch McConnell, the questions nobody in the media seems willing to ask about Trump’s health, and why our political system keeps rewarding people who refuse to let go of power. We also managed to laugh a little along the way, because if you don’t find moments of joy in all this, they’ll wear you down.

Here are some moments you don’t want to miss:

[00:02:49] We break down the unanswered questions surrounding Mitch McConnell’s disappearance, why Republicans are protecting the situation, and what it could mean for control of the Senate.

[00:08:24] The conversation turns to term limits, transparency, and why elected office is a privilege—not something anyone is entitled to keep forever.

[00:16:29] We dig into Trump’s health, the lack of public accountability, and why voters deserve honest answers from every president, regardless of party.

[00:19:44] We talk about media desensitization, the stories that disappear too quickly, and why following through matters just as much as breaking the news.

[00:22:17] We close with the bigger lesson: everyone who chooses loyalty to Donald Trump eventually gets burned—and why real accountability has to come for the people who enabled all of it.

This episode is about the culture of secrecy, entitlement, and impunity that keeps failing the American people. He will not be the Democratic nominee for Senate in Maine. Good. He’s a tremendous scumbag, and I believe the credible accusations of sexual assault against him.

I’ve spent the last week in New York doing what feels like every cable news show in existence talking about this, and I don’t want to relitigate the story itself. It’s been talked to death, plenty of it by me. What I want to talk about is wha t happens around stories like this — the thing that’s actually broken.

Because every time one of these scandals breaks, everybody sprints to claim the moral high ground. Republicans jumped in immediately: Democrats backed the guy with the Nazi tattoo, and now he’s a rapist. The Democratic Party is evil. And Democrats sprinted right back: Donald Trump has been credibly accused of abuse by dozens of women. He’s in the Epstein files. Back and forth, forever, like a tennis match nobody wins.

I played my part in it this week. I had a clip go extremely viral from Fox News where I pointed out that Max Miller — a sitting Republican member of Congress from Ohio — has been accused of beating his wife and throwing a pot of boiling water on her chest in front of their kids. Fox had no answer to that. None.

And look, I’ll say it plainly: I’m not going to be lectured by the Republican Party. That party is filled with these people, and they know it.

But here’s the thing I need to be honest about, and I need you to sit with it too: the moral high ground doesn’t exist. Neither party has it. Not on this.

Too many Democrats looked away from who Graham Platner was and what Graham Platner had done — because he was saying the right things on the economy, and because people thought he was going to win. That’s just true. It’s exactly the same reason too many Republicans look away from Trump, or Max Miller, or Ken Paxton, an absolute scumbag who’s their Senate candidate in Texas. They look away because they think these men can win. Let’s stop pretending otherwise. Winning became the ethic, and everything else became negotiable.

It’s wrong when they do it. It was wrong when we did it.

And it’s not like Platner is some one-off. I was one of the first people to call for Eric Swalwell to resign from Congress, and I believed he had to get out of the governor’s race the moment those accusations became clear. But these things should have been handled forever ago. There are predators inside the Democratic Party. Inside the Republican Party. In Congress, in lobbying firms, in consulting firms. They are everywhere. And they have all got to fucking go.

This is why I keep saying — especially about the Epstein files — that none of this is a partisan issue for me. I don’t want to score points. I want the creeps out of our government and out of our politics. Release all the files. Prosecute every single person who trafficked and abused kids — Democrat, Republican, or otherwise. If there are Democrats in those files, and we know there are, prosecute the shit out of them. I do not care what letter is next to their name.

Endless Urgency is free to read—thanks to our paid subscribers. I believe women because it’s the right fucking thing to do. When women put their lives, their bodies, and their finances on the line to tell the truth about the men who abused them, I want to hear those stories. I want to weigh them seriously. And I want the abusers gone. It doesn’t matter if it’s Christine Blasey Ford telling her truth about Brett Kavanaugh, who sits on the Supreme Court today. It doesn’t matter if it’s the women who bravely came forward about Eric Swalwell, or the women who called out Graham Platner. All of these creeps have to go.

So here’s my ask — of everybody in politics, in the media, and honestly of myself:

Stop pretending there’s moral superiority to claim. There isn’t. Everybody, at some point, has failed to live up to our highest ideals on this. Every party, every institution, and plenty of us as individuals. The reductive back-and-forth — the your guy’s worse than my guy game, the shouting about Trump on cable news as if that settles anything — it’s a way of avoiding the tough conversation, not having it.

What we should be doing instead is simple, and hard. Have the tough conversations, including about our own side, especially about our own side. Create the conditions for women to come forward knowing they’ll be safe, protected, and believed — not weaponized in somebody’s news cycle and then discarded. And commit, actually commit, to exposing and removing the abusers inside our parties, our politics, and our government, whether their name is Graham Platner or Max Miller or anybody else.

Because at the end of the day, this isn’t a game. There are women all over this country who are too afraid to step forward, who don’t have platforms, who will never get justice against the men who hurt them — and who relive that trauma every single time we turn one of these stories into a partisan scoreboard.

I’m ashamed of the part I’ve played in that game. We’ve all got to do better. Let’s start now.

Upgrade to paid

UPDATE: Mitch McConnell STILL Missing as Republicans FREAK OUT

Mike Nellis & Adam Mockler LIVE — Every Wednesday and Saturday at 11am ET

Mike Nellis

Endless Urgency is always free to read, but this community only grows because people choose to invest in it. We dug into why Republicans keep falling back on the same tired “communist” attacks, how those distractions help take attention away from corruption, and what it really means to fight for a country that works for everyone. No explanation. No public schedule. No votes. Tom Kean, New Jersey’s 7th District, last cast a vote on March 5th. He missed well over 140 votes after that. And almost nobody in Washington or the corporate press seemed to give a damn.

Now he’s back. And the explanation is that his doctors recommended hospitalization for depression.

Let me be very clear about something before I say anything else: depression is real. I’ve lived it. It took real work to climb out of that hole, and I know exactly how it wrecks you — mentally, physically, all of it. I’m genuinely glad Kean got care. I mean that. Nobody should be shamed for getting treatment for a mental illness, and the more public officials who are honest about that struggle, the better — it opens the door for other people to get help too.

But here’s the thing. Kean isn’t just some guy. He’s a member of Congress. And that comes with a different standard.

You do not get to disappear for four months, with no explanation to your constituents, while the country is dealing with an illegal war and an economic calamity, and just expect everyone to shrug it off when you resurface. If you didn’t show up to your job for four months with zero explanation, you’d be fired. And good luck finding another job after that. That’s not partisanship. That’s the two-tier system in this country in one clean example — the people who are supposed to answer to us operate by a completely different set of rules than the rest of us do.

And I want to be honest about something else: I’m skeptical. Not of depression as a diagnosis — of these people’s honesty in general. This crowd lies about everything, constantly, reflexively. I hope this story is exactly what he says it is. But given the track record of the people currently running this country, forgive me for not taking anything at face value anymore.

Endless Urgency is free to read—thanks to our paid subscribers. Apparently nothing will stop these guys from profiteering off taxpayers. And that’s become one of the defining features of American politics: the people with the most power have convinced themselves the rules simply don’t apply to them. They disappear. They enrich themselves. They lie. They abuse public office. And then they act genuinely offended when anyone suggests there should be consequences.

Here’s what actually disqualifies Tom Kean: It isn’t that he got depressed. It’s that he wasn’t honest with the people who elected him, that he disappeared during one of the most consequential stretches in recent American history, and that the entire time he was getting taxpayer-funded care, he was voting to gut the exact system that gives regular people access to that same care. Kean voted for the so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill” — the one that guts Medicaid, the single largest funder of mental health services in this country, and that let ACA tax credits expire, sending premiums up more than a hundred percent for millions of families. He voted to make it harder for his own constituents to get the kind of help he needed and received. The people writing the rules rarely have to live under them themselves.

So no — he shouldn’t lose in November because he had depression. He should lose because he wasn’t honest, because he was absent when his district needed him most, and because he spent his career voting to strip away the very safety net he leaned on himself. Forget party for a second. That’s disqualifying on its own.

And this isn’t just a Kean problem. This is a Washington problem. We have a generational leadership crisis in this country — a Congress full of people clinging to power well past the point they should’ve handed it off, members literally dying in office because nobody will step aside, and almost total silence about the health of the people running the country. Joe Biden’s inner circle lying to the public about his decline for a year and a half is a huge reason Donald Trump is sitting in the White House again right now. And right now, Trump himself is visibly, obviously declining — medical experts have said as much — while his people trot out comparisons to NFL players and lie about his weight and his cognitive state like we’re all supposed to just believe it. That boy ain’t right, and everyone around him knows it.

It’s the same mindset you hear when Mike Johnson defends members of Congress trading stocks because they have to “support their families.” Members of Congress already make far more than the median American household. Millions of families survive on forty or fifty thousand dollars a year without access to insider information. The problem isn’t that Congress can’t support itself. The problem is that too many people in Congress have forgotten they’re public servants, not a protected class.

We need real transparency about the health of the people who hold power over our lives. Not because getting sick is shameful — it isn’t — but because these are people with enormous responsibility, who are susceptible to manipulation and burnout just like anyone else, and the public has a right to know if the person making decisions about war and the economy is actually capable of doing the job. The same standard should apply to every abuse of public trust. If you misuse power, lie to the people you represent, or use public office for private gain, there should be consequences. And this isn’t about vengeance. It’s about making sure no one is above the standards everyone else is expected to live by. Without that, power just keeps rewarding itself.

And this can’t just be a Democratic talking point. Republicans need to hold their own accountable here too, or nothing changes.

If you’re reading this and you’re struggling — with depression, anxiety, whatever it is — I mean this sincerely: reach out. I’ve been in that hole. I know how dark it gets. You are not alone, and getting help is never something to be ashamed of.

But getting help and being honest with the people who trusted you with power are two different things. Tom Kean failed at the second one. That’s why he should lose.

Upgrade to paid

It Should Have Been 9–0

Endless Urgency is always free to read, but this community only grows because people choose to invest in it.

Mike Nellis

Endless Urgency is always free to read, but this community only grows because people choose to invest in it. It’s hot as hell, I just walked out of breakfast with my family, and I’m about to go kayaking with my kid — which, for the record, matters more than anything I’m about to write. But I can’t let this one go. Not today.

Because today the Supreme Court upheld birthright citizenship, and I’m grateful they did. I mean that. It’s the right call. But here’s the thing nobody wants to sit with: it should have been nine to nothing.

This was the easiest, plainest ruling any of these nine people will ever make. The 14th Amendment says what it says. A first-year law student gets this one right. A kid in a middle school civics class gets this one right. The final vote was 6–3 — six justices upheld birthright citizenship, with Chief Justice Roberts writing the majority in genuinely beautiful language:

“Citizenship, then and now, was the right to have rights—to freely participate in our political community. The Framers of the Fourteenth Amendment extended that promise to ‘every free-born person in this land’ [...] We keep that promise today.”

Great. Mean it. So why couldn’t they all sign onto that sentence?

Because three of them — three — couldn’t get there. Three justices looked at the plainest words in the Constitution and dissented, essentially arguing that the President of the United States can narrow them by decree.

That is complete and total horseshit.

Brett Kavanaugh joined the majority to strike the order down — good, credit where it’s due — but he dissented in part, and *how* he got there is the whole tell. Kavanaugh rested his vote on a federal law, not on the Constitution. Read that again. He would not say that the Constitution *itself* guarantees birthright citizenship. He needed a statute to lean on. And a right that only stands because Congress propped it up is a right that stops standing the day Congress — or a president strong-arming Congress — kicks the prop out. So count it honestly: Three justices flat-out dissented, and a fourth voted the right way for the most dangerous reason on the menu. The vote was 6-3. The rot is deeper than the scoreboard.

Just Imagine if Joe Biden was President and signs an executive order tomorrow that says, “There’s no Second Amendment anymore. Nobody owns a gun, and I’m sending federal agents to come collect them.” Imagine the meltdown. Imagine these same justices “discovering” the limits of executive power in about nine seconds flat. They would never let a Democrat do what they’re carving out room for Trump to do. Never.

So no, I’m not spiking the football over a 6–3. I’m telling you what the 6–3 reveals. Three justices would have let a president rewrite the Constitution outright, and a fourth thinks he can in principle. When four people on the highest court in the land are unable or unwilling to fully commit to the idea that a president can’t erase the Constitution with a Sharpie, the court isn’t a court anymore. It’s an operation.

This was never just one ruling

Once you see it, you can’t unsee it. Because the same day, they gutted what’s left of our campaign finance laws — opening the door to complete and total coordination with party committees.

I’ve worked in this space for two decades. There used to be rules. Lines you couldn’t cross. Now? Everybody’s self-governing, which is a polite way of saying there are no rules at all. No guardrails. No checks on consolidated power.

And guess who that helps? It helps the billionaires. It helps Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Sam Altman, and every oligarch who’d rather buy an election than win an argument. Every one of these rulings does the exact same thing — it puts a little more distance between you and your own elected officials. Between you and your own power.

That’s the throughline. That’s the project. Birthright citizenship was the headline. The fine print is everything else.

Meanwhile NPR runs a story that Chief Justice Samuel Alito is finally retiring, then yanks it back an hour later, and now the whole internet is swimming in garbage information and nobody knows what’s true. For the record — selfishly — I hope Alito stays. I hope he’s arrogant enough to cling to that seat the way Thomas seems determined to, so a Democratic president gets the pick. But that’s a sideshow. The main event is the rot.

Endless Urgency is free to read—thanks to our paid subscribers. Justice Sonia Sotomayor — a fantastic justice — received something like $4,000 in Bad Bunny tickets from a record label which has the rapper as one of its clients. And Republicans are out here clutching their pearls, trying to tell you that’s the same as Alito and Thomas taking lavish, all-expenses-paid vacations from billionaires like Paul Singer. People with actual business in front of the Court.

Give me a break. I said it on Twitter yesterday and I’ll say it again: when Benito has a case in front of the Supreme Court, then I’ll be worried about her tickets. Ban all of it — I don’t think any justice should be taking that stuff. But don’t you dare tell me a concert ticket and a billionaire buying influence over the people deciding his lawsuits are the same animal. They are not.

The right has built a whole religion around the Founders. They love to scream about the Founders. They do. “Oh, the Founders intended this. Oh, the Constitution, blah, blah, blah.” They don’t give a damn about the Founders. If they did, we wouldn’t have a court where three of the current justices worked on the Bush v. Gore side that stole the 2000 election from Al Gore. We wouldn’t have a ruling that hands a president near-total immunity for crimes he commits in office. What world is that justice? Where did the Founders intend that?

They gutted the Voting Rights Act. They made gerrymandering easier than it’s ever been. They kicked reproductive freedom back to the states, and more than half of states turned around and stripped women of rights they’d had for 50 years. And people are literally dying because of this. This isn’t a philosophy. It’s pure, outright power and corruption wearing a robe and wielding a gavel.

And make no mistake about where it’s headed: a permanent oligarchy. The Epstein class. A political class that does nothing, that doesn’t give a damn about you or me, locked into power for a generation. If Trump gets to appoint more of these justices — if he builds a majority that genuinely believes a Republican president can rewrite the Constitution by decree — then the president gets to do whatever the hell he wants. He basically already can.

You are less free than you were. Less safe. Less powerful. That’s not opinion. That’s the scoreboard.

So here’s what we do about it:

The Republican Party is gone — it’s the party of Donald Trump now, and it exists to give him and his people unprecedented power. The only way they win is by cheating, and they will break every rule that’s left to do it. The mid-decade gerrymandering. The SAVE Act. All of it.

And here’s the hard truth for my own side: we cannot keep playing by a different set of rules than these people. We’re the party that’s supposed to care about ethics and morality and doing it right — and that instinct is inherently good, but it’s getting us slaughtered against an opponent that has no instinct at all except winning. Honor doesn’t mean bringing a pamphlet to a knife fight.

So when we have the power, we must use it — relentlessly. We expand the Supreme Court. We restore some basic semblance of justice and dignity and fairness to it. Not “reform” — though I support reform — but expansion. We put serious people on it. People who take the job seriously, who’ll have a real debate about what the Constitution actually says and how it protects our freedoms, instead of operatives running cover for a party that has lost it’s soul.

And the good news? More and more people get it. Pete Buttigieg gets it. Jon Ossoff gets it. J.B. Pritzker gets it. AOC gets it. There are real fighters out there, and there are more of them every single day. So when we get the chance, we don’t flinch and we don’t apologize for it. We bury these guys politically — for a generation. To save the middle class. To save our democracy. To save the country.

That’s the assignment.

But here’s the most important thing I’ll say all day. My son is out by the shoreline right now, beckoning me to get in the kayak. And I’m going to go.

Not because the fight doesn’t matter — it matters more than almost anything I can name. I’m going because the fight is long, and the people on the other side are counting on exactly one thing: that we burn out. That we get cynical, throw up our hands, and decide it’s all hopeless and rigged and there’s nothing we can do. That’s the whole play. Every ruling we just talked about is designed to make you feel powerless so you stop showing up. Don’t give it to them.

So I’m going to go be a father for a few hours. Get on the water with my kid, and remember in my bones exactly what I’m fighting for. And then I’m coming back and getting right back to work — and I want you to do the same.

That’s the model. Love the people in front of you. Then fight like hell for them. And for the country they’re going to inherit. Both. Always both. Burn clean, not out — because a movement of exhausted, cynical people loses, and a movement of clear-eyed people who refuses to stop leaning into moments of joy — no matter how big or small — is unstoppable.

We expand the Court. We build a new party. We swing the pendulum back on these guys so hard they don’t know what hit them. And we do it as whole people — because that life on the water, with the people you love, is the thing we’re trying to protect.

Now go get in the fight. Then go get on the water.

God bless you guys. Love you. Happy Fourth.

Upgrade to paid

This Is How They Pick Us Off

This weekend, someone with hate in their heart picked up a phone, called Child Protective Services, and falsely reported that Pete Buttigieg was abusing his four-year-old twins.

Mike Nellis

Endless Urgency is always free to read, but this community only grows because people choose to invest in it. A complete fabrication, built on a story about some woman who supposedly met Pete at a conference in Alabama — a town he has never set foot in. But that’s all it takes. The call triggered a process. CPS and the police showed up at his home in Michigan. His kids were sent to their grandparents’. Pete was told he could not be alone with his own children until they’d been interviewed by strangers. For twenty-four hours, this family had no idea what he was even accused of. This wasn't just an attack on Pete Buttigieg. It was an attempt to make public service hurt. That's the point.

Twenty-four hours. He called it among the darkest of his life. And as a father, I believe him — because I’ve been sitting in my own rage about this for two days, and they’re not even my kids.

Here’s what you need to understand about Pete Buttigieg. The man is calm. He is level-headed to a fault — the kind of person who keeps his voice even when everyone around him is losing it. So when *that* guy tells you about the rage and the sadness he felt, when *that* guy says someone “dragged our children into this,” you should feel your stomach turn. Because it takes a lot to rattle Pete Buttigieg, and somebody found the one thing that would do it. They did it on purpose. They did it during Pride Month, right after he posted photos of his family for Father’s Day. That’s not an accident.

There are about ten different rants in me right now. How we protect LGBTQ parents from this kind of targeted cruelty. How the disgusting anti-Pride rhetoric coming out of the MAGA movement this month is a permission slip for exactly for cruelty like this. All of it is worth writing. But I want to talk about the part that scares me most, because it’s the quiet part nobody says out loud.

This is how they pick us off.

Good people — talented people, people who actually have something to give to their community, their city, their country — these are the people who watch what happened to Pete and decide it’s not worth it. I said the same thing when Melissa Hortman was assassinated in her own home in Minnesota last year. Every time one of these things happens, somewhere out there a good person who was *this close* to running for school board, for city council, for the state house, quietly decides to sit it out. Who could blame them?

Endless Urgency is free to read—thanks to our paid subscribers. When I told my wife I wanted to write about this — that I wanted to get into it with my buddy Adam Mockler on our Saturday show — she asked me not to. She didn’t want something like this to come for us, for our son, for our family. And you know what? That’s not paranoia. That’s a completely legitimate fear. I sat with it. I almost didn’t write this, because writing it elevates it, and elevating it is what these people want.

But here’s the thing about me: when I feel that fear, I tend to steer into the skid. I know not everybody is built that way, and I will *always* tell people to do what’s right for them and their family first. No rant is worth your kid.

But understand what’s happening if we all flinch at once.

You ever wonder why it feels like our politics is overrun with psychopaths and grifters and losers? It’s not an accident. It is an intentional process of selection. Every assassination, every threat, every swatting, every bogus CPS report quietly filters out another decent person. There is an entire class of people who feel no shame, who don’t care who they hurt, who aren’t trying to *accomplish* anything — and those people are not scared off by any of this. They’re falling over themselves to run. They’ll bend every rule, break every law, abuse every campaign finance loophole, go on TV and say the most vile thing they can think of, because cruelty is the product. That’s how you get Trump. That’s how you get all of them. And every time a decent person decides it’s too dangerous to step up, the field gets handed a little more completely to the worst people in America.

I don’t want these people to win.

Whether it's Melissa Hortman, a Minnesota elected member of Congress murdered in cold blood in her own home; or Alex Pretti, a thirty-seven-year-old ICU nurse, gunned down by federal agents as he stood in the street recording them and trying to help a woman they'd knocked down; or someone trying to take Pete Buttigieg's children from him over a lie, the objective is the same: they want you to hesitate. They want you scared to show up to a No Kings protest. Scared to pull out your phone and record ICE. Scared to put your name on a ballot. That's the point. We cannot accept this.

We cannot hand this country over to people who do not care about the rest of us, who aren’t interested in building anything, who only know how to burn it down. When we withdraw, when we go quiet, when we get scared — that *is* them winning. That’s the whole game.

So I’m proud of Pete Buttigieg. I’m sorry it happened to him, to Chasten, to those two little kids. I can’t imagine it. But I am so damn grateful he told the story, and even more grateful that he’s staying in this fight. Because silence is part of the strategy. If enough good people stop speaking, stop organizing, stop running for office, stop showing up... they don't even have to beat us. We surrender. That is why this moment demands from all of us, the exact opposite — people who will steer into the skid, who will refuse to stop recording, who will relentlessly hold these monsters accountable, who will call it what it is, and who will not let them take this country away from us.

Don’t let them win.

Upgrade to paid

Trump’s DOJ Breaks Epstein Law — Plus: Mamdani’s NYC Takeover and the Fight for the Democratic Party — with Mike Nellis and Joe Walsh

Welcome to the Party, Pal! with Mike Nellis & Joe Walsh — Fridays 10AM ET

Mike Nellis

Endless Urgency is always free to read, but this community only grows because people choose to invest in it. And at almost every single one, I’ve heard the same question come up from the floor. Not from consultants. Not from staff. From regular people who took a night off and showed up.

The question is this:

How do we get accountability for the crimes and the corruption of Donald Trump’s administration?

I want to tell you how proud that question makes me. Because for decades the standard operating procedure in this country has been to forget. To let it slide. To “look forward, not back.” To let the corruption fall by the wayside and tell ourselves we’re being the bigger people. And meanwhile the rot spreads.

Not this time. The American people are not letting it slide. Good.

Because what we are watching right now is not normal. It is not politics as usual. We are living through a level of corruption that is unprecedented in modern American history.

Donald Trump has stolen billions from the American people. Billions. He has cut loose cop-beaters and drug dealers and crypto scammers — let them walk straight out of prison — because they put a little money back in his pocket. He has built a cottage industry for white-collar criminals, where if you’re rich enough and connected enough, you can do anything in this country with total impunity.

And at the exact same time? He throws out the rulebook for everyone else. He attacks immigrant communities. He goes after anybody who protests. He comes after independent content creators. He comes after activists — people like me. He comes after Democratic candidates because he doesn’t like what they say. He comes after elected officials. Over and over and over again.

Two sets of rules. One for the billionaires. One for the rest of us.

That’s the part I need you to sit with. That two-tier justice system is not a side effect. It is the rot at the core of this country.

And don’t tell me this is new. Trump did not invent this sickness. He exploited it. He saw the loophole that powerful men have been using forever and drove a truck straight through it.

We have been letting the powerful walk for a long time.

In 2008, Wall Street torched the entire American economy. They wiped out people’s homes, their retirements, their jobs — millions of lives gutted. And how many of the executives who did it went to prison? Basically none. We bailed them out, dusted them off, and sent them back to work. We are still living with the ramifications of that decision today. A whole generation watched the people who broke the country get rescued while they got foreclosed on, and they learned the lesson we taught them: the rules are for you, not for them.

Go back further. Richard Nixon ran a criminal conspiracy out of the Oval Office, and Nixon never spent a single day in prison, because Gerald Ford pardoned him. We told ourselves it was about “healing the nation.” What it actually did was establish the precedent that a president is above the law. That was bad for the country then, and we are paying for it now.

And right on cue — just yesterday — Vice President JD Vance stood up at the Nixon Library and praised Dick Nixon. Said his legacy is enjoying “a renaissance,” and “deservedly so.” Said if Watergate happened today it’d be a 12-hour news story. He’s rehabilitating one of the most corrupt presidents in American history out loud, in public, with a smile on his face. Which honestly makes perfect sense, because the man works for a pedophile protector. Of course he thinks the crimes don’t count. His whole job is making sure they never do.

That is the whole project. Not just committing the crimes. Not just covering them up. But training the country to stop caring. Training us to believe this country does not belong to us anymore. That government of the people, by the people, and for the people is just some old line in a textbook instead of a promise we are supposed to fight like hell to keep.

Endless Urgency is free to read—thanks to our paid subscribers. They’re going to want to rebuild the institutions. Restore stability. Return to normal. And I understand the instinct. I do.

But normal is what got us here.

We don’t need restoration. We need radical change. And radical change starts with accountability.

Because think about what we’re actually saying if we let this go. If the Epstein class — the people who used little girls and little boys — walk away clean, and the American people never even learn the truth, what kind of country is that? If Donald Trump can steal, cut deals with foreign governments, manipulate markets to enrich himself and his family, and never face a single consequence — not him, not his kids, not one person around him — then what do we actually have left?

I’ll tell you what we have. We have a country that deserves what’s coming to it. Because a nation that refuses to hold the powerful accountable is a nation that has already decided the powerful are above the law.

The only way this changes is you.

You have to keep getting in the faces of our elected officials and our candidates and demanding accountability. Not because they’re bad people — a lot of them mean every word they say on the campaign trail, and I’m not here to attack our own candidates. But because the gravity of this business pulls everyone back toward the same old, same old. Back toward hunky-dory politics where the comfortable stay comfortable. Left alone, they will drift. The realities of the world will get in the way. They’ll do the right thing only if we make the right thing the path of least resistance.

You can be polite about it. You don’t have to be mean. But you cannot stop asking.

And here’s the part nobody wants to hear:

When we win the midterms this November — when we take back the House and the Senate — the fight does not stop. When we elect a Democratic president in 2028, the fight does not stop. We do not get to go back to sleep.

That’s the trap. There is an expectation baked into my party that the second we get a boring, decent Democrat back in the Oval Office, everyone exhales. Everyone goes home. Everyone checks out.

That’s exactly how we drift. That’s exactly how good people in office quietly fail and how ‘accountability’ becomes a campaign slogan instead of a governing demand. We got into the hard questions. The messy ones. The debates a lot of people are afraid to have in public.

Here’s what we got into:

[00:01:07] David breaks down the New York primary results, why voters are demanding something new, and what the victories say about the future of Democratic politics.

[00:07:16] We debate whether challenging Democratic incumbents ultimately strengthens the party—and why internal competition might be exactly what’s needed before November.

[00:14:16] We tackle the controversy surrounding Daria Lisa, discuss political litmus tests, and wrestle with where Democrats should draw the line.

[00:20:00] David explains why Leaders We Deserve is investing in young candidates at the state level and why experience still matters when building lasting political power.

[00:29:00] We close with what Democrats need to offer voters beyond simply opposing Trump—and why hope, organizing, and anti-corruption have to become the party’s defining message.

The fights happening inside the Democratic Party right now are shaping what comes next—not just in one city, but across the country. We talk about generational change, accountability, organizing, and what it really takes to earn voters' trust. That’s how long it took.

Tucker Carlson announced he’s done with the Republican Party — no more supporting GOP candidates, an independent man of conscience now, too principled for the party that made him. It pissed off Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, and everyone else who relies on Tucker Carlson’s audience to keep their failed movement alive.

Then, before the story had even faded, he went right back to gushing about JD Vance. How much he loves him. What a great man he is. How Vance is the obvious choice to lead the GOP into 2028, the only one who can carry Trump’s legacy forward.

So which is it?

You’re done with the Republican Party, but you’re doing unpaid advance work for its most likely next nominee? Normally I wouldn’t waste time on these two — Fuentes is a racist, sexist, anti-Semitic little shit weasel, and Tucker has spent years poisoning our politics in a more polished package. But this fight tells us something about the moment MAGA is in.

Tucker Carlson is a creature of the Republican Party. He’s GOP royalty — his father served in multiple Republican administrations, he built his career inside conservative institutions, spent years at Fox News, spent years attacking Democrats and defending Republicans whenever it suited him. The Vance worship is the tell. You don’t quit a movement and then anoint its next leader. A man actually done with the GOP wouldn’t have a favorite candidate to run it.

For all his sudden anger that Trump isn’t truly “America First,” Tucker had no problem being a happy foot soldier when it paid. He sold the Iraq War for years. He attacked Obama and Biden for trying to end it. He carried water for the movement he now wants you to believe he’s outgrown. That’s why I doubt this entire performance.

I agree with some of the criticism — the GOP doesn’t represent average Americans, and Trump has exposed himself as someone who never meant the promises he made his own voters. But Tucker didn’t discover that because he grew a conscience. He discovered it because Trump is weaker than he used to be, and Tucker sees an opening.

That’s what Fuentes understands. And again — Fuentes is a neo-Nazi piece of shit, and nobody should mistake this for praise. But he sees Tucker copying the strategy he’s run for years: build independence from the establishment, attack the party as corrupt and weak, cultivate a young angry audience, then use that influence to drag the movement even further in your direction. The only difference is Tucker knows how to make it sound slightly more respectable.

Mid-rant note: this section is sponsored by Ground News.

I’ve started paying more attention to how the same story can feel completely different depending on who’s reporting it. Ground News makes that easy to see by showing coverage from across the political spectrum and pointing out what certain outlets leave out.

My team and I use it because it helps cut through the noise.

See every side of every story with Ground News →

Try it today!

Subscribe

Here’s the real story: Donald Trump is weak. He can still win a primary like he did with Massie and make Republicans embarrass themselves on command. But he cannot hold this movement together. A powerful leader wouldn’t have Tucker Carlson, Nick Fuentes, Candace Owens, and every other MAGA influencer jockeying for position in broad daylight. The emperor has no clothes.

So when Tucker Carlson says he’s done with the GOP, do not fall for it. He told you the truth one day later, with his own mouth, when he started campaigning for JD Vance. He’s not abandoning the Republican Party — he’s auditioning for a bigger role in it, testing how much power he has over it.

This is a jump ball for the future of the right, and the people reaching for it are some of the worst in the country. Every one of them wants you to believe they’re independent free thinkers while they line up behind the same party and the same playbook. Don’t let them launder it. Watch what they do, not what they say — and be ready to stop these people before they drive this country even further into the ditch.

P.S. We didn’t agree on every detail, but we agreed on the big thing: people are demanding something different.

Here’s what we got into:

[00:01:05] Adam checks in from Chicago and we set the stage for a conversation about the political earthquake that unfolded in New York.

[00:07:25] We break down the biggest primary upsets, the growing rejection of special-interest influence, and why voters are rewarding candidates who speak directly about affordability.

[00:14:55] A deeper debate on whether New York’s political shift represents a national movement—or something more specific to the city itself.

[00:24:20] We talk about why establishment Democrats keep losing trust, what voters are actually angry about, and why anti-Trump messaging alone isn’t enough anymore.

[00:38:55] A candid discussion about building a winning coalition, balancing ideals with governing, and what it really takes to create lasting change.

The Democratic Party is in the middle of a real identity test. Voters are frustrated. They’re looking for leaders who communicate clearly, focus on economic issues, and actually deliver results. In this conversation, Adam and I unpack the tension between insurgent energy and governing experience—and why both matter if we want to build a stronger future. If you care about where the party is headed and what comes next, this is a must-watch conversation.

If you value honest conversations like this, help me keep them going.

Become a paid subscriber to Endless Urgency today »

With urgency,

—Mike

Upgrade to paid

MAGA MELTS DOWN Over Mamdani's NYC Knicks Speech

Endless Urgency is always free to read, but this community only grows because people choose to invest in it.

Mike Nellis

Endless Urgency is always free to read, but this community only grows because people choose to invest in it. People loved it. MAGA media hated it. And after sitting with it for a few days, I think the reaction tells us something much bigger than just sports.

This wasn’t really about basketball. It was about storytelling, identity, and why some political leaders connect with people in ways others simply can’t. If you missed this one the first time around, it’s worth going back to. The conversation is just as relevant now as it was when it happened.

Here’s the breakdown:

[00:01:08] Mamdani breaks down the Knicks’ impossible comeback and turns a 0.4% chance into a rallying cry for New Yorkers everywhere.

[00:03:50] The speech shifts from sports to something deeper—what it means to fight through impossible odds and keep showing up anyway.

[00:05:10] I explain why this speech is actually a masterclass in political storytelling and movement-building.

[00:06:45] I get into why Trump and the MAGA ecosystem seem obsessed with moments like this—and why cultural relevance matters more than they want to admit.

[00:11:20] The conversation ends with a bigger question: why are some leaders focused on helping people while others are focused on staying in the spotlight?

This episode is really about authenticity. We break down what made Mamdani’s speech resonate so deeply, why it triggered such a strong response from conservative media, and what it reveals about leadership, culture, and political communication in 2025.
