I tried to unwind this weekend. I really did. I told myself I wasn’t going to think about the election, or the Trump administration, or any of the hundred other things that have been pissing me off lately. I was going to sit on my couch, watch some football with my kiddo like a normal human being.
And then, right as the games were getting good, the screen cut away to a slow-motion montage of Donald Trump. Swelling music. Flags. A narrator telling me how lucky I am to be living through this glorious moment in American history.
God damn it.
And no, I’m not talking about him showing up at the Tennessee game. I don’t particularly care about that. That’s his prerogative. Go eat a hot dog, wave at the jumbotron, whatever. I’m talking about these insane ads.
What I’m pissed off about is that, over and over again, they used your money and my money — our taxpayer dollars — to air what are obviously illegal campaign ads on national television. Because for two years, these people have lectured us about waste, fraud, and abuse. They’ve taken a chainsaw to programs people actually rely on and told us it was necessary to protect the American taxpayer. Money for housing assistance, adult education, schools, national parks, cancer research for kids (that last one pisses me off the most) — apparently we need to tighten our belts.
But Donald Trump needs a television commercial? Break out the damn checkbook.
What a slap in the face. This administration keeps telling working people that government can’t afford to help them, while somehow always finding money when it serves their Supreme Leader.
They’re so desperate to hold on in the midterms that they’re now openly abusing their power in a way that is stupid, foolish, and so transparent that I’m honestly embarrassed for them.
Every time one of these ads came on, it filled me with more rage. And not one of them convinced a single person in this country that this administration is solving a problem that might actually improve their life. If anything, I think these ads are going to backfire simply because of the sheer arrogance required to make them in the first place.
People don’t like watching their tax dollars get spent on a politician’s vanity reel. And the way these people think Americans are spectacularly stupid should irritate the shit out of every single one of us. Including their own voters. Especially their own voters. Because that’s how they treat them.
Here’s the thing: these ads could not be more ineffective if they tried.
One of them tells you Donald Trump is removing all the warmongers from Washington, D.C.
Let that sink in for a second.
This is the man waging an illegal war in Iran right now. At least 22 American service members are dead. 22 families got that knock on the door. 22 empty chairs at the dinner table this fall. And God knows how many more there will be once we finally get an honest number. Meanwhile, he’s manipulating the market and profiteering off of it, while the rest of us eat the cost of the global economic and energy crisis he created.
And he has the nerve to use your money to buy airtime during a football game, to call himself the guy who ended the warmongering.
It’s absolutely sickening.

And then there’s the line they keep hammering in these ads: America will never be taken over by communism. America will never become a communist country.
There is no greater communist in American history who has achieved power than Donald Trump. And these ads prove that point. They are straight out of the Chinese Communist playbook. They look like they could be airing in North Korea right now. Glossy, government-funded tributes to the Dear Leader, jammed between downs. And this is the guy warning YOU about communism?
He’s hosting giant dinners with the president of China and the big tech billionaires bankrolling Republican campaigns. He’s offering to sell weapons to the Chinese at the very moment the Chinese are helping prop up Iran in a war nobody wanted in the first place.
And while he’s doing all that, his family is cashing in on their positions in government. He’s taking public stakes in private companies.
That’s socialism, guys.
At least, it’s the kind of socialism I’ve been told my whole life to be terrified of. Except apparently it’s totally fine when you use the full power of the federal government to make one rich family even richer. What you can’t do, God forbid, is use that same power to make sure you don’t go bankrupt when you get sick. Or to make sure you get a fair day’s wage for an honest day’s work. Or to build a social safety net that takes care of the least among us.
Oh no. Not that. That’s the scary kind.
But socialism for the wealthy? Socialism for big tech billionaires? Socialism for the Trump family business? Step right up.
They don’t actually seem to have a problem with government spending. They have a problem with who it gets spent on and who it serves.
So here’s where I land, and you know how I end these things.
Take that rage. Take whatever you’re feeling right now, the anger, the disgust, the exhaustion, and turn it into something meaningful. We have one month left until this election. They’re on the run. They’re scared shitless. You can smell the desperation on them in every move they make, including this one.
They’ve got your tax dollars to spend on propaganda. We don’t. What we have is each other.
So here’s how we split the work. You make the calls, chip in to a campaign, find a race and plug in. And I’ll keep doing what I do: calling this out every single week, loudly and without apology, so you never feel like you’re the only one who sees it. I’m sure they love the idea that they triggered another lib this weekend. Let them enjoy it. Because the days of triggering the libs are over.
The American people are pissed. And they’re coming for them at the ballot box.
With urgency,
—Mike
