How This Kind of Messaging Backfires Politically and Fuels Real-World Harm

Aired 1.15.26

Hey folks,

I went on NewsMax to push back on something we’re seeing more and more of on the right: the deliberate use of ICE and immigration enforcement to stoke fear about Somali Americans. It’s not subtle, and it’s not accidental. This kind of rhetoric isn’t about public safety — it’s about racializing an entire community for political gain.

What’s especially dangerous is how easily media narratives turn real people into abstractions. When commentators and politicians imply that Somali communities are inherently suspect, they’re feeding a cycle of dehumanization that leads to harassment, discrimination, and worse. We’ve seen where that road goes before.

And here’s the truth Republicans don’t want to confront: this strategy doesn’t actually help them win. Demonizing immigrants and minorities might juice a TV segment, but it alienates voters, hardens divisions, and creates real harm in the world. Calling it out isn’t just morally necessary — it’s politically necessary too.
