"Are some Democrats nervous because a few of our own people might be in those files? Fine. Let the truth come out. I’ll accept that." We should WANT those Democrats who abused women and men and violated criminal laws by doing so to be outed and suffer the consequences of their inexcusable behavior! Both as a matter of Justice and also so that they will no longer be able to used the economic, social or political power that they have to continue to abuse women and men or to protect themselves or others from the legal and social consequences of their disgusting behavior. Even if all you care about is getting Democrats elected, you should not want such men (or women) to make the Democratic Party vulnerable to their being outed in the future.
Time to clean house! Don't let these abusers stay under the Democratic tent!
Absolutely! One of the differences between Democrats and Republicans is our lack of tolerance for corruption and abuse of power. When those who engage in this behavior are outed, we deal with them, and we certainly don't elect them to the White House or allow them to continue their abuse.
Strictly speaking, Mike, 1/3 of the country voted for Trump, 1/3 voted for Biden‘s last minute replacement, and 1/3 didn’t bother to vote.
To me, the last two are the problem. Biden should not have run again, and Harris should’ve had at least a year to prepare for her run for the presidency. And that 1/3 that don’t bother to vote— that’s the other big problem.
If we want to win that 1/3 of the population that doesn't vote, we have to give them something to believe in and I think this Epstein is a window into that.
I hope you’re right about it. At least from what I’m seeing that people are commenting about online, and assuming that the people I think are real people are in fact real people, I don’t share your optimism.
Again, it’s very difficult to tell who’s real and who’s not. But I keep asking the question, “he’s changed the story X number of times. When are you going to start believing that maybe he doesn’t have a story?”
I don’t get any response to this. If they’re real people, that’s very disturbing because they are unreachable about it. And if they’re fake people, that’s also very disturbing because there are a lot of of them.
That’s not really true. We have been over performing and winning trump plus 20 districts in special elections and btw we lost by a bit over 1 point in a race that had little runway. Please. Tout that- instead of bashing lift the success UP
The 2024 election was also massively rigged by Republicans. All of the data is full of human manipulation, Russian tails etc. It’s going to court, with multiple court cases likely pending. Voting machines were literally updated massively but the labs told no one and marked huge updates as “minor” so they wouldn’t have to tell anyone or test etc. That lab has gone dark now since this info on the machines came out. NSA and other whistleblowers are coming out confirming that the election was massively rigged. This is literally a Coup by Republicans/MAGA but Democrats seem to constantly only care about “being the bigger person” or looking a certain way.
I agree 1000%! Only those who perpetrated these assaults should be worried, and they earned that worry when they victimized others. I'm sure there are guilty parties among both Dems and Reps, and they should all be revealed! I applaud the courage of those who refuse to be victims any longer, and they deserve our support! Mike is absolutely correct in his position! It's long past time for justice and accountability!
I stand beside them too, Gemma. Once sexually abused as children, they speak out telling us ALL that we need to know. Call your Congresspeople. That Republicans in Congress condone this coverup is unbelievable. Who elected pedophile enablers? These abused women have the names. Trump is clearly a complicit abuser. Have no doubt about that. There is much more to expose with this administration. Look at a totally different administration coverup just days ago! https://hotbuttons.substack.com/p/vegas-joint-ops-child-sex-decoy-stings?r=3m1bs
What do you call a Democrat who has molested children? A child molester.
What do you call an ally who has molested children? A child molester.
What do you call a Senator who has molested children? A child molester.
This is really not hard. Anyone who is a child molester belongs nowhere near the levers of power, regardless of their party. I'm a loyal Democrat, and if some Democrats are child molesters then I hope those people rot in prison.
Yes, this is a huge issue that the Democratic party needs to deal with, and the sooner the better.
That does not mean abandoning the kitchen table issues that every household, Democrat, Republican, Independent or third party, deals with daily. We can't just be "anti" corruption, abuse, etc. We have to be FOR something, and that something is lifting up working families, women, kids, education, and racial minorities. Kamala Harris had a great slogan: "For the People". Sadly, too many people didn't get it, and that's why we are in this mess.
Maxwell and Epstein did not run a Mom and Pop business. In fact, they could have been working for or with one or more people who desired their “services.” I agree with you. Where are the investigations? Where are the prosecutions?
There was an article in this morning’s San Francisco chronicle about the town of Livingston. The town is still mostly blue, but a significant portion of the people have moved to the right, even though it’s mostly Latino and Punjabi immigrants. The things that were interesting about this article were that a lot of young men have moved to the right. But a lot of those young men don’t bother to vote. And a lot of those young men get their news only from social media, not from reading newspapers. And a lot of those young men aren’t particularly educated, so they are the lawful prey of people whose social media statements are, shall we say, less than the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
And all of this makes them prey to any strong man who tells them what their itching ears want to hear. It’s because thinking is hard. Empathy and tolerance is hard, and doesn’t make you feel better about yourself yourself unless you can reward yourself psychologically for being empathetic and tolerant. Educating yourself on the issues is hard. Reading the newspaper and understanding what it has to say is hard. Thinking about why people might say what they say to you is hard. It’s much easier just to listen to a strong man tell you what to think.
The whole monstrous kerfuffle about transgender people is the perfect example of this. Transgender people have been known to science for around 100 years. They’ve been known to cultural anthropology for around 150 years. But because these unthinking people don’t know any transgender people, don’t care about any transgender people, don’t understand anything about the issue, and are completely unable to point to anything in their own lives that has gone bad Simply because transgender people exist…
They are more than happy to vote for someone who will do something about the transgender menace that doesn’t exist and never has existed. Hitler employed exactly the same tactic with the Jews, taking advantage of 1900 years of official Christian antisemitism to build his base and his power on the backs of innocent people who weren’t bothering anyone except to exist. He did the same thing with gay people in Weimar Germany, with the Roma, with disabled people.
The Christian right and the reactionary Republicans tried to do the same thing with gay people, but what they did was too little and too late. They were somewhat successful for a generation, and then lost big time. Transgender people are their replacement whipping boys. But that’s not stopping the Christian right and reactionary Republicans from trying to demonize gay people. They may be successful this time around.
I don’t have a real answer for this, other than I think that our constitution has stopped serving us. There should be a constitutional requirement to vote. Money isn’t speech. Corporations aren’t people. Separation of church and state protects both church and state. Gun rights are not absolute. Equality before the law should mean something. The right to vote should be guaranteed with no ability of any state or jurisdiction to interfere in it. No more lifetime appointments for federal judges. Reasonable term limits and age limits on elected office. Felons may not be elected to federal office.Gerrymandering is illegal. No senators should have the power to stop a vote. A simple majority should be sufficient to pass any law in Congress. Congress must declare war for any military action— the last time Congress actually declared war was 1941, despite every single war we’ve been in ever since. There’s a long list of things that need fixing, and there isn’t any political or moral will to do it.
But those are just the political problems. The moral problems to me are as weighty. The ongoing murder and genocide in Gaza should be the concern of every civilized person. The Arab world certainly doesn’t seem to care much about what happens to the Palestinians, seeing them only as a pawn in their never-ending war with each other and with Israel. There is no Good will on either side of this, and there stopped being any Good will when I was a boy. And that was a long time ago. That’s why the problem has no solution. The incursion of Russia into Ukraine— ditto. Billionaires should not be able to buy government. Organized religion should not be able to use the coercive power of the state to enforced dogma on anyone anywhere.
I have a lot more thoughts on this, but I have other things to do. I just thought I would throw all of this out there.
I too listened, and I totally agree with you. We should not be worried if they are found to be Rebublicans or Democrats because criminals are criminals, and those that prey on the young are the worse of the worst. As a Democrat, I have been behind our allowing those within the party that are found guilty getting their just reward (and being booted out of the party to boot). People are people, your politcal affiliation does not make you a criminal, your behavior does.
I also want to say that our party is not broken as many believe, though we may be in a time of flux. Yes, we have work to do, but haven't we always. The beauty of the Democratic Party is that we aren't the so-called lemmings (those the myth is about - pure myth); we embrace our differences and celebrate our beliefs and principles.
Your job, (if I may be so bold) is now to encourage those that are speaking up and remind everyone what we are fighting for (I used to hate the word fighting; but, now I know we are at war, so we must!).
You need to have some women’s voices in the names you name. I don’t trust men to deal honestly with the sexual exploitation of anyone: men, women or children.
I think you've got it wrong. If Democrats can aid abet a genocide in Gaza, massacring and maiming hundreds of thousands while starving children to death, how can we trust them to protect our children here? Answer: we can't and I never will. What precisely will the release of the Epstein files accomplish? Do you think Trump or Bill Clinton or Alan Dershowitz be prosecuted? Of course not. The wealthy and powerful are rarely if ever held accountable in our corrupted careerist political system, leaving the rest of us to fight over the scraps. https://barryjkaufmando.substack.com/p/stop-fascism-defund-the-democrats
What is your answer to Hamas fighters using Gaza civilians as human shields? What is your answer to Hamas still being the governing entity in Gaza and also ripping off food supplies intended for civilians?
It's hard to believe the Democrats weren't also compromised by this scandal. It's unlikely that anyone who has been in politics for any amount of time isn't also caught up in this. Asking them to out themselves seems as likely to succeed as calling on a stone to sing.
The Democrats in Congress who do step up to support full disclosure of the Epstein files will actually be strengthening their own bids for future office-holding, as those abusers who are exposed to public view lose their political power and ability to compete for votes.
Democrats do not have the trust of the American people any longer. Lifelong Democrats such as myself can no longer be counted on to support the party or its candidates. The percentage of voters who are registered Democrats is declining. Some of us are only remaining registered as Democrats so that we can vote in primaries for candidates that oppose the party's anointed candidates.
Is there some Pledge of Allegiance to the Democratic Party that I do not know about? Are those who register as Democrats obliged to vote straight Democratic tickets no matter what scoundrels manage to get the financial and other backing of Democratic Party national, state and local l leaders and so win primaries? How is the Democratic Party going to become more responsive to voters if those of us who are dissatisfied with the slate selected in backrooms cannot vote for primary candidates that will challenge the backroom deal-making? I do remain true to myself by continuing to vote in Democratic primaries, trying to get the party on the course that I believe better reflects the values that the party claims to hold.
My only reply is that you seem to no longer want to be known as a Democrat, so why demean everything about the Party? If you still want to continue to part of the Party, work to help elect people you believe would reflect the Party better. In fact, give me names of those who you think are scoundrels and I will give you 10 Republicans who are worse and give you reasons, indeed facts, about them. We can start with Trump!
Any "strategist" looking at this right now and saying we should be backing away is not a strategist. They are a lobbyist who has been part of the driving force of why the status quo for this country has hung around.
LITERALLY this is THE ONE SINGLE THING that not only has stuck, but has moved the needle. So anyone calling themselves a strategist while saying this should go away has absolutely zero business being a strategist....or they are either working for the right wing or they are protecting their own criminality, perhaps. Those people need to go away permanently. The party should have no part in utilizing people who clearly is so oblivious that they can't see the forest through the very obvious trees. I mean that's just malpractice to walk away from what is obviously working.
The winds are shifting. Listening to them would be equivalent to the 2024 election all over again. This has to stop.
Mike, your key point is that we are talking about *WHAT WE DO TODAY*, and who we are today as defined by our actions, not what Trump or anyone else did 20 years ago. These women are the victims of a coverup, and the crimes that are covered up have no statute of limitation in many states. It's unlikely that the DOJ will prosecute the perpetrators, but state attorneys general might. The point is that we can do something today, and everyone should. This coverup is ongoing - Trump says it' a "democratic hoax" at least three times in each conversation. He's hiding something, it's a crime, and the people have a right to the truth. If Democrats can help deliver that, they will gain trust.
To your other point, that some are advising to move on past the issue, I can only say that they are wanting to avoid a fight that they need to be in the middle of. You can't claim to have an opinion worth listening to if you're advising the army to retreat to safe ground when they have the enemy retreating already.
Everyone who votes against the measure, and everyone who voted for the Big Beautiful Bill, need to see their names on every Democratic opponent's signs in the runup to 2026.
And today, people of character should loudly support efforts to find the truth.
Sexual abuse touches a tender place for most women and dads of girls. Most women have been abused in some way. If not sexually then financially or emotionally or physically. You never want your daughter drugged used like a rubber and tossed by her abuser. And the horror continues. There is a reason that even in prison sexual abusers receive a warm welcome by horny inmates while guards are on break wink.
Preserving the trust. Of Course the democrats have been participating in the benefits (privileges) and status level of responsibility of their position. Self preservation is guiding us away from truthfully a better choice on how we want to live together.
"Are some Democrats nervous because a few of our own people might be in those files? Fine. Let the truth come out. I’ll accept that." I don’t get the rebuild trust ? Why are WE rebuilding something we didn’t break? The GOP NEEDS THE REBUILD
The American people don't trust the Democratic Party. If they did, we wouldn't have lost to Trump... again.

I do tout that but special elections are low voter turnout and we do we have broader trust issues with the public.
