Immigration, Chaos, and the Common-Sense Middle

Aired 1.29.26

Hey folks,

I went on NewsNation this week to talk about immigration, deportations, and the politics swirling around both—and what struck me most wasn’t the shouting, but how far apart the incentives are from the solutions. Republicans want to take credit for every good headline. Democrats want to distance themselves from the mess. Meanwhile, real people are caught in the middle.

Here’s the truth: border security matters, and Joe Biden didn’t do a good job handling it. But what we’re seeing now isn’t order—it’s chaos. When ICE acts indiscriminately, when protesters are met with force, and when accountability disappears, public trust goes with it. You don’t fix a broken system by breaking it harder.

There is a common-sense path forward. Secure the border. Deport violent criminals, traffickers, and anyone committing serious crimes. And at the same time, create a real, humane pathway to citizenship for the millions of people who’ve lived here for years, raised families, worked jobs, and contributed to their communities. Most Americans are already there—even if Washington isn’t.

That’s the lane Democrats need to own if we want to win again. Not slogans. Not fear. Just competence, humanity, and results.
