Endless Urgency exists because paying attention isn't enough. The point of this work is to understand what's happening, refuse to look away when it gets scary, and turn that fear into something useful. We keep this work free for everyone because everyone deserves to be informed, prepared, and ready to act. I woke up this morning the way I wake up too many mornings: reaching for my phone before my feet hit the floor, bracing for whatever fresh horror the country cooked up overnight. Instead I got a barrage of polling updates so good it made me suspicious.
Angie Nixon tied in Florida. Democrats leading in Kansas and Idaho. Places that have no business being competitive are competitive. And you can tell it’s real because of how the other side is behaving — Republicans are dumping massive amounts of money into races they should be able to sleep through, and they’re putting the Vice President of the United States on a plane to go beg for votes in states they won by twenty.
It is an absolute mess over there, and I am delighted. Call it schadenfreude if you want. I’ve earned a little. Because this is precisely what the natural consequences of unprecedented corruption look like. A year and a half of Donald Trump back in office, a year and a half of wrecking things faster than anyone can catalog them, and the bill is finally coming due. Watching them panic is the closest thing to joy I’ve felt in months.
And still. Sitting behind all of that, in the back of my skull where it always sits, is the fear. I'm delighted. And I am terrified.
Because we’ve been here before. We’ve had the good polls. We’ve felt the energy, the enthusiasm, the sense that the country was finally turning toward something decent — toward a nation that works for working people and leads with empathy and intelligence instead of whatever stupidity falls out of the Republican Party on any given Tuesday. We’ve felt all of that, and we’ve had our hearts broken anyway.
So I don’t trust it. I refuse to believe certain races are actually competitive. I struggle most days to believe James Talarico is going to win in Texas. Maybe that’s what political scar tissue looks like after you’ve worked in this field for two decades. You stop knowing how to experience hope without waiting for the other shoe to drop.
But maybe I don’t need to believe any of it yet. Maybe belief isn’t the job. The work is the job.
But here’s the thing about that fear: fear is energy, and energy demands movement. Our instinct is to run from it, but fear doesn’t disappear when we turn away. It stays inside us. It festers. It turns to poison. Fear that you sit with for eight hours, thumb scrolling, jaw tight, learning nothing and doing nothing — that fear eats you and produces exactly zero votes. But convert that fear into motion and it becomes an edge. Knock on a door. Call a friend. Give twenty bucks to somebody you actually believe in. Volunteer. Organize. Learn something that makes you useful.
Do that and the fear becomes fuel instead of a disease. You don't have to become fearless. You have to become dangerous to the thing you're afraid of.
That's why I built Endless Urgency. Not to give you one more thing to be afraid of, but to make sure fear doesn't become paralysis. We pay attention. We connect the dots. We prepare for what's coming. And then we do something with what we know. If that kind of work matters to you, become a paid subscriber and help us keep it free for everyone.
So I’ll tell you what I did with my fear this morning: I spent thirty minutes this morning with my staff putting together an election integrity event here in Chicago for the beginning of October, with a stack of partner organizations and some genuinely brilliant people who know this stuff cold. The agenda is the ugly hypotheticals nobody wants to say out loud: What happens if Trump sends ICE agents to polling locations? What happens if they truly screw with mail-in ballots? What happens if the FBI shows up to take ballots away because he doesn’t like how the count is going?
Those are the scary things. Good. They should scare us. And the answer to scary things is not to whisper about them — it’s to get people in a room, get them informed, and get them ready. You learn. You organize. You prepare. That’s what useful fear looks like.
And if the polls are even half right, we’re going to need that preparation. Because desperation doesn’t make these people less dangerous. It makes them more dangerous. Republicans are going to get more desperate, not less. You can smell it on them. Last week Donald Trump tried to straight-up bribe the American people: five thousand dollars, a “dividend,” if Republicans win back the House. I have been doing this for twenty years and I have never seen polling where Americans overwhelmingly rejected free money. That’s not a policy failure, that’s a character verdict. It made him look weak and stupid and craven, even by his standards.
Meanwhile the Vice President of the United States — God’s perfect idiot — is out there explaining that you’ve just got to give these guys two more years. It’s so hard to fix the Biden economy, they say. Funny. In 2024 they said everything would get cheaper on day one. They said they wouldn’t be launching illegal foreign wars like every other Republican president. They were going to be different. And now it’s two more years and everything will be sunshine and farts.
How many times are these people going to lie before they finally get punished for it? Here’s the good part: that’s the part we control. Not the polls. Not Trump’s behavior. Not whatever Republicans try next. The consequences.
That’s what November is. That’s where all of this fear finally gets somewhere to go. Is the Democratic Party perfect? God, no. But it is the last organized group of people in this country still trying to make it better. If you want real accountability, if you want to end this war, if you want to end these tariffs, if you want to end the rampant corruption metastasizing through Washington, there is one lever and you know what it is. Vote Democratic, and fight like hell to protect your right to do it. And don’t you dare convince yourself the work is finished because a poll made you feel good.
I’m hardly the first person to say this, but if your vote didn’t matter, they wouldn’t work this hard to take it from you.
They are running scared. Ignore the bluster. Ignore the attacks. Ignore the fear-mongering, which is the only product they have left to sell. Be ready for what’s coming and keep your head on a swivel. Because favorable polls aren’t permission to relax. They’re an invitation to double down and push harder. Make the calls. Send the texts. Give what you can. Talk to your neighbors.
Especially the ones who got caught up in MAGA. There are more people than ever quietly ready to admit that Trump failed them, and the single dumbest thing you can do right now is tell them you told them so. Give them an on-ramp. Let them be part of the solution instead of making them defend the worst decision of their life. If they’re your friends, your family, the guy three doors down — give them the opportunity. They deserve that.
That’s what I’m doing today. I hope it’s what you do too.
With urgency,
—Mike

Thanks Mike for this and you're 100% spot on, the Republicans are running scared which makes them even more dangerous and everyone knows they are definitely going to fuck with the mid-terms and in 2028.
Thank you Mike. We have it this time I hope. I know what waking up to whatever fresh hell Trump did over the night feels like.
He’s getting desperate and he’s not to be trusted.
They should have impeached Hegseth this week. Mike Johnson is absolutely awful for several reasons.
