Donald Trump has threatened for months to abuse the power of the federal government to go after Omar. Now he’s done it.

This didn’t come out of nowhere. Trump has spent the better part of the last year demagoguing the Somali community in Minnesota over fraud allegations. That’s incredibly rich coming from a man whose family is, by far, the most corrupt group of people to ever rule in America. I’ve argued before that this is the 2026 version of “the Haitian migrants are eating the dogs and cats.” It’s a convenient excuse for Trump to demagogue immigrants and people of color, as he loves to do, especially in the middle of an election.
You can feel however you want about Ilhan Omar. That’s your business. But you should be alarmed by what’s happening to her, because it follows a pattern inside the MAGA movement that I know intimately.
It goes like this. They decide they don’t like somebody. Maybe that person is standing in their way, or maybe there’s just something to gain by going after them. So they turn to the fringe of the internet, people like Laura Loomer, to cook up a conspiracy theory. They manufacture fake reporting. They lie, they cheat, they steal. Then they fire up the MAGA media machine and point it at their target.
Eventually they create the conditions where enough people believe something happened, and because that something “happened,” the federal government now has to step in.
I know because they did it to me. They decided, out of thin air, that I was somehow involved in Donald Trump’s fraud case. It wasn’t rooted in anything real. They doctored a bunch of evidence that didn’t even make sense and just ran with it. It was total bullshit. But it didn’t matter, because it ended with the House Judiciary Committee and Trump’s DOJ investigating my company over nothing. And make no mistake about what it actually was: a fishing expedition to go after my clients. It cost me time, energy, and hundreds of thousands of dollars to defend my business. All because they could. Because they didn’t like me, and they didn’t like my business partner.
Now they’re running the same play on James Talarico. Talarico, a man with type 1 diabetes, got the flu, which can put you down for quite a while and he needed to take a week off to rest. Republicans, by way of weird, crazy online influencers like Spencer Pratt and Nick Sortor, spun that into a conspiracy theory that engulfed the entire MAGA movement on X for the last. They went so far as to doctor a fake phone call with a mental institution claiming Talarico had checked himself in, with no evidence whatsoever. They ended up looking like idiots.
I’ve started paying more attention to how the same story can feel completely different depending on who’s reporting it. Ground News makes that easy to see by showing coverage from across the political spectrum and pointing out what certain outlets leave out.

It’s all staggeringly weird, disgusting shit. These people do not live in the same reality as the rest of us. They concoct their own reality to back up their lies, and way too many people believe them, with plenty of help from Russian bot farms along the way.
And it shows you just how desperate they are. According to the polling, the Republican base has never been more depressed. They can’t get their people to show up for anything anymore. So they’re throwing red meat. And what’s redder meat than a Somali-American congresswoman the MAGA base already hates, one they’ve spent a decade demagoguing and calling corrupt and crooked? They’ll invent whatever justification they need and abuse whatever power they have to get their voters off the couch.
They’re going to keep doing it. It’s going to get more dangerous, and more people are going to get hurt.
We have to take these people seriously for the threat they pose, and we have to actually stop them.
The level of criminality, abuse of power, corruption, and cravenness we’re living through in Washington right now is unprecedented. That means the accountability will have to be unprecedented too. That will require our next generation of Democratic leaders to make a lot of very uncomfortable decisions. If they aren’t prepared to make them, they shouldn’t be running for leadership in the first place.
Our country should be better than this. Right now, we’re not. And this is not sustainable.
