My father died 40 years ago. We had been mostly estranged for something like 10 years, and the previous five years were not all that great, either. I wasn’t going to go to his funeral because I had basically given up trying to have a decent relationship with him. I had realized that he loved me as much as he could, but he certainly didn’t love me very much. Eventually, I did decide to go because my brother asked me to.
I like the man I became, and I have to give my father credit for that. But not all of the credit.
