The miraculous news arrived this morning: the latest jobs report came much stronger than what anyone expected. A gift from heaven for the Trump administration, right on schedule.
I laughed. I'll be honest with you — I scoffed and chuckled a little when I saw it, because I don't believe a single number that comes out of this administration. Not one.
Yesterday's ADP report told a completely different story. Almost no job growth. Manufacturing jobs lost. Wage growth so slow against inflation that it functions as a pay cut. That report got a shrug. Today's number got the full treatment. All day long the MAGA media machine has been running its victory lap — the Golden Age of America is here.
But you and I know exactly who the Golden Age is for. A handful of corrupt people inside Donald Trump's White House and inside his family. That is the entire list. There is no Golden Age for you and me.
They're lying about these numbers. Let's be clear about it. They fired the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics last year. We are two months out from an election. You don't need to be a genius to see the plan: convince people the economy is better when it fundamentally isn't, and hold that lie together just long enough to get through November.
And this is hardly the first time. I could spend the rest of this newsletter cataloguing the dumpster fire of things these people lie about. But forget the small stuff. A few weeks ago they were caught lying about the number of American servicemen and women killed and wounded in the illegal war in Iran Donald Trump launched. They lied about the dead. If you will lie about that, you will absolutely lie about a jobs number. There is no bottom with these people, and anyone taking today's report seriously deserves to be laughed at.
Now let's say I'm wrong. Let's say the numbers are real. So what?
Inflation in this country is brutal. Trump's war in Iran. Historically high gas and diesel prices. Tariffs that are both incompetently implemented and a pure exercise in the vanity of one man, making everything you touch more expensive. What exactly is a great jobs report worth when you need two or three of those jobs to cover your grocery bill? A job is not a life. A job used to be a floor you could build something on. Now it's just a thing you collect several of and still come up short.
So when I hear the MAGA media machine tell me the Golden Age is here, that Republicans have been saved in the midterms, that we have finally hit the miraculous moment where the economy takes off — I know what I'm listening to. It's fucking cope. That's all it is. Cope, and more cope, and more cope on top of that.

Meanwhile the average person is sitting at home right now, struggling, quietly giving up on the American dream. Convinced they will never own a home. Never pay off the student loans. Never retire with dignity. Never start the family they wanted. Never start the business from the idea they have been carrying around for years, the one they still believe in when nobody’s looking. Never marry the person they’ve been putting it off with because the timing was never right and now it never will be. People are delaying their entire lives because of this economy. That is the story that matters, and nobody at the BLS is telling it.
And what is Donald Trump doing? Giving tours of his big beautiful ballroom. Building an arch with his name on it. Talking openly about how he has to build his legacy right now, while he’s still here, because he knows perfectly well that nobody is going to do it for him after he’s gone.
He’s right about that part. Maybe somebody would want to build a monument to this man if he had ever done one single thing worth remembering. What has he actually done? He dragged this nation to the bottom. He destroyed the global economy. He embarrassed and humiliated our military. He got eighteen American servicemen and women killed. He put people in harm’s way for nothing. He terrorized immigrant communities. That’s the record. That’s the whole marble slab.
Nobody is going to remember anything good about Donald Trump’s life. The minute he’s gone, the rest of the country will say out loud what it already knows — that he was a failed, lame duck president — and all of it will catch up to him. We are very close to that moment now. Very close to the day when suddenly everybody was against all of it the whole time.
That includes the Republican congressional candidates who are right now begging Donald Trump to stay the hell out of their districts while simultaneously begging him to spend a piece of that $400 million dollar war chest to save them in November. They want the money. They just don’t want the man anywhere near a camera in their state. It’s not going to work.
So do not let them gaslight you. Do not let them gaslight anybody you love into believing this economy is strong. The daily indignity that the vast majority of Americans are living through — at the gas pump, at the grocery store, when they crack open a laptop and look at a house they will never be able to buy — that is the real economy. That’s the one you live in. It’s destroying people’s belief that tomorrow can be better than today, and that is a much harder thing to rebuild than a factory.
They can print any number they want. They can put it on every screen in America and have every anchor read it in the same reverent voice. It doesn’t change what’s in your account at the end of the month. And it doesn’t change what you already know.
