Hey folks,

Jack Cocchiarella is back, and he’s sick. I’m running on basically no sleep, and somehow we still ended up having a nearly 40-minute argument about the future of the Democratic Party.

We get into Trump’s midterm campaigning, the expanding Senate map, what Democrats should actually run on, and then Jack and I have a real disagreement about progressives, moderates, ICE, electability, and what it takes to build a winning coalition.

  • [00:04:29] Before politics, we somehow end up debating Democratic campaign culture, authenticity, boba, football tweets, and why candidates need teams that actually understand the people they’re talking to.

  • [00:11:28] We turn to Trump’s upcoming campaign stops in Texas, Alaska, Iowa, and Florida, and discuss what those trips say about the Republican midterm strategy.

  • [00:20:36] The migrant caravan discourse is back, which sends us into a bigger conversation about immigration, Republican messaging, and what Democrats should prioritize.

  • [00:24:42] Jack and I start disagreeing, in a good way, about how bold Democrats should be, which policies candidates should embrace, and whether concerns about electability lead the party to water down its message.

  • [00:32:43] The debate gets real: Bernie Sanders, Zohran Mamdani, Abigail Spanberger, Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic establishment, progressive groups, campaign spending, and whether progressives can build a broader electoral coalition.

This is the kind of conversation I want us to have more often. Jack and I agree on a lot, disagree on plenty, and neither of us needs the other person to shut up or fall in line. There are real strategic questions about where Democrats go from here, and people who want the same broad outcomes can have very different ideas about how to get there. If you value independent conversations where we can actually disagree and still keep talking, help us keep building this.
