Voter ID Isn’t the Problem — Bad Policy Is

Aired 2.6.26

Hey folks,

I went on NewsNation this week to talk about voter ID, and predictably, it turned into a shouting match about polls and talking points. Here’s the thing: voter ID as a concept isn’t some great threat to democracy. But the SAVE Act? That’s a mess—and pretending otherwise ignores how real people actually live their lives.

About one in five Americans doesn’t know where their birth certificate is. That’s not fraud; that’s reality. When you design laws that make it harder for eligible voters to participate, especially when there’s no evidence of a widespread problem, you have to ask what the real goal is. Changing the rules in the middle of the game is usually a sign you’re worried about losing.

The broader issue here isn’t just voting—it’s trust. People are frustrated about the cost of living, about a political system that feels rigged, and about culture wars that never seem to end. If we want to win elections and actually govern, we need to focus on affordability, fairness, and solutions that meet people where they are—not ideological stunts.
