The wheels are coming off Donald Trump’s White House, and the reason is simple: nobody wants to work for him anymore. The last couple of days have been a perfect snapshot of how fractured the MAGA movement has become, and how quickly the people who once begged for a seat at the table are now racing for the exits. But it is the reason they’re leaving that tells you everything you need to know about where this presidency is headed.
The rats have been fleeing the Titanic for a while now. An unprecedented number of people have walked out of this White House at a critical moment for the president, heading into a midterm where his party looks like it’s going to get creamed and lose the House at minimum, and quite possibly the Senate too. That’s why it was so strange to watch Karoline Leavitt bail right in the middle of it. But she sees the writing on the wall. She knows things are about to get ugly, and she doesn’t want to spend the next two years of her life on her back foot defending this shit. Because it’s one thing to defend Donald Trump when you think you’re going to be rewarded for it. It’s another thing entirely when you realize you might spend the rest of career answering for it.
So who did they replace her with? Katie Zacharia. And based on her first performance yesterday, she is totally unqualified for the job. She wasn’t prepared. She didn’t seem to know her stuff. She didn’t have the composure. And look, being White House press secretary is an incredibly hard job, even for the best of presidents. You have to step up on day one ready to go, and she clearly wasn’t. She confused Trump with her husband. She missed basic facts that were sitting on the sheet right in front of her. She got lost more than once. She looked like a deer in the headlights.
It almost made you feel bad for her, until you remembered she’s a crazy right-winger who believes Nazis invented the abortion pill, who has said she doesn’t care about the Epstein files, and who has backed ICE agents killing American citizens. It’s disgusting stuff. And what’s more — as if that wasn’t already enough — is that before taking this job, Zacharia was a senior communications adviser for Truth Social, Trump’s own social media company. The same company that announced it would sell banks and trading firms faster access to Trump’s posts, which have literally moved global markets. Think about how insane that is. The lines between the presidency, Trump’s business interests, and his propaganda operation have all but disappeared.
And apparently, none of that disqualifies you from standing behind the White House podium. But not knowing what the hell you’re doing should.
Then there’s Kimberly Guilfoyle. They’re forcing her to resign over brazen corruption that, frankly, looks mundane next to what Donald Trump and his family get up to every single day. And now she’s out there hinting that she’s got some kind of burn book, some stash of compromising material. The administration is reportedly terrified she’s going to write a book or talk to the press and badly embarrass her ex-fiancé Don Jr., or the president of the United States himself.
That’s the part worth sitting with. When your own people stop being assets and start being liabilities, when the folks who know where the bodies are buried start walking out the door with grudges, you’ve lost control of the operation. The people who were perfectly happy to help him break the government are suddenly a lot less interested in sticking around to answer for it. And it’s happening while the economy is failing, the war drags on, and the midterms bear down on them. Every week brings a new scandal, and every scandal makes the next person think twice about signing up.

It wasn’t always like this. Inside the Republican Party, this was the hottest ticket in town. At the beginning, people were lining up to join the Trump administration. They thought it would be a golden age for America, that they were going to build some kind of Republican paradise. They were delusional, of course. You and I knew that. They didn’t. Now nobody wants the job, and the best Donald Trump can recruit is the B team, the C team, the D team. I don’t even know what letter we’re on anymore.
Here’s the scary part. We already have unqualified sycophants at multiple layers of our government, from the Pentagon to the military to the FBI to the Food and Drug Administration, people who don’t know what they’re doing but whose loyalty to Donald Trump is paramount above everything else. Donald Trump spent years making loyalty the only qualification that mattered and he's discovering what happens when that becomes the only thing your people have to offer.
And now even those people are leaving. They’re scared of accountability from a Democratic Congress. They can’t get done what they came to do. And they can see the president spiraling.
Because he is spiraling. The man is staying up all night posting AI-generated memes of himself wrestling a tiger, just hours after sharing footage of a 23-year-old man being fatally mauled by one. A video the victim’s family had pleaded with people to stop circulating.
A tiger.
And somehow, Trump thought the appropriate response to that tragedy was to make himself the star of an AI-generated fantasy about wrestling the animal.
I don’t even understand that one. The man needs serious help.
So when you wonder why Donald Trump is handing the White House podium to a second-rate MAGA influencer who was literally working as a communications adviser for the very platform where he’s posting this deranged shit, there’s your answer. Nobody else will take it. You can laugh and scoff at the absurdity of this administration all you want. God knows I do at times. But there's nothing funny about what happens when the people running your government have absolutely no idea what the fuck they're doing.
Because this isn’t just palace drama. When you staff a government with loyalists who can’t do the job, the country pays for it. You see it in the economy, where so many people are struggling right now. You see it overseas, where this crew has created a global energy crisis that hurts basically everyone and has pushed more and more of our allies toward our enemies, like China, because they’ve decided Beijing is a more consistent trading partner than Washington. That’s what happens when the D team is running foreign policy.
But the election is three weeks away, and that’s an opportunity for the sane wing of this country to get one hand back on the wheel, as imperfect as the Democratic Party can be. It’s going to take a couple more years to really right this ship, and you should be prepared for things to get a lot weirder and a lot worse before they get better. But they will get better. This is not sustainable, and the American people understand that in a way they certainly didn’t two years ago when they voted this jackass back into office.
Hang in there. Keep doing the work. And take care of yourself.
With urgency,
—Mike
