Donald Trump Has Never Met an Abuser He Didn’t Want to Save
Politico reported yesterday that Donald Trump and his team personally stepped in to stop the Republican Party from abandoning Congressman Max Miller — a man credibly accused of beating his wife and his three-year-old daughter. Let that sit for a second. The President of the United States went out of his way to protect HIM. And the more you look at the men Donald Trump chooses to protect, the harder it is to pretend this is an exception.
It’s a disgusting low for a president who doesn’t seem to have much of a bottom. And it’s a disturbing moment for a Republican Party that can’t even manage to do the obviously right thing — not the morally right thing, not even the politically right thing, which in this case happen to be the same thing: cut Max Miller loose. Instead they’re going to sacrifice millions of dollars on this House race to keep him afloat, all to placate a man who reflexively protects people who are violent toward women.

I’ve been screaming into the void about this for months. And I’ll be honest — I have almost no respect left for the Republican Party’s ability to police its own, and even I’m shocked. Shocked at the arrogance. Shocked at the sheer horribleness of propping up a man like this, an obvious anchor around the neck of their own party, and daring the rest of us to say something about it. But here we are.
So let me add a couple of things to this conversation.
First: every single Republican candidate in this country and every single Republican officeholder should be asked, on the record, whether they agree with Donald Trump that Max Miller should stay in this race. Do they think it’s appropriate for a man credibly accused of domestic violence — not only by his wife and daughter, but by former girlfriends — to keep his seat in Congress? Do they agree with that? Is a single Republican in America willing to stand up to Donald Trump on this one thing?
My guess is no. And that tells you everything you need to know. Because anyone who won’t stand up to defend women and children from violent abusers is never going to stand up to corporate special interests. They’re never going to fight to make your life better. They’re never going to do the right thing when the chips are down. That cowardice is the whole ballgame with this Republican Party. Trump protects these men, and everyone around him falls in line.
Second: there’s another scandal we’ve been tracking, and it rhymes with this one. Andrew and Tristan Tate are sitting in custody, awaiting extradition to the United Kingdom on horrific charges — abusing women, trafficking, child pornography. If there were any justice in this world, both of them would already be spending the rest of their lives behind bars for what they’ve done. But the Trump administration has been running interference for them, and everybody following the story is holding their breath, waiting to see whether Trump saves the two men who happen to be friends with his kids.
I think we already know the answer. Donald Trump is going to step in to save the Tate brothers, one way or another. Maybe they weasel out of it. Maybe Trump keeps just enough distance that he never has to put his name on it. But someone in that orbit — Don Jr., or somebody we haven’t even thought of yet — is going to do the dirty work.

Because think about it. Trump was willing to personally intervene for Max Miller — a disposable congressman he could swap out tomorrow for any other hack willing to do whatever he says. If he’ll burn political capital on a guy who means nothing to him, why on earth would he not save his own son’s friend? Of course he’s going to do it.
Donald Trump has never met an abuser of women he didn’t want to trust and save. He surrounds himself with them. Corey Lewandowski. Ryan Fournier. Steve Bannon. When Donald Trump looks in the mirror, he sees himself reflected back in the faces of these men — men who have been violent and disgusting toward women. Of course he’s going to save the Tates. They’re his kind of people.
And this country should be outraged. The problem is we’re numb to it — and that numbness is part of what allows this to keep happening. We have been so thoroughly desensitized to the dehumanization of women by this administration, so worn down by the grotesque corruption of it all, that we’re all walking around in a daze. Oh, what did he do today? Oh. Well, what can I do about it? It breaks my heart to watch so many people move through their lives having simply stopped caring, because the system feels that broken.
But I’m going to keep shouting into the void, because I’m angry, and because anger is the right response. We can demand better. We should demand better. We do not have to put up with this shit. We can get this country back on track. We can drive these men out of power, and we can bring some real accountability back to Washington.
The Trump crime family needs to be held accountable for their crimes and their abuses. The Tate crime family needs to be held accountable. And every well-connected coward standing alongside them — hoping for a pardon or a reprieve for the people they’ve hurt — needs a rude awakening. They need to feel the fear of God coming for them, so that America never tolerates this kind of lawlessness and abuse again. Not from the politically connected. Not from the rich who think they can buy their way out. Nobody gets to stand above the law — especially when it comes to protecting the women and children in this country.
We will not accept it. We must not accept it. Stay angry. Stay focused. Do not let up until these men are brought to justice and every person they’ve harmed gets the accountability they deserve.
