That’s not exactly true. It’s not just for the people online because he calls out the hypocrisy to the reporters faces who are question why he’s doing these tweets. Why are you noticing my tweets when I’m just mimicking what the president of the United States is doing. Why do not have the same energy when he has tweeted like this for years now. Personally was not all in for Newsom either but you can be sure i am now and the rest of democrats need to start fighting just as hard because we will not have a country if they continue to do nothing.
Agree, it’s time for democrats to align with each other and focus on the real issues and enemies of democracy. It’s not Schumer, or Jeffries, or any progressive or moderate dem. It’s the magat fascists, plus complicit republicans, who dems of all stripes should be the targeting in all upcoming elections. As well as calling out all the enabling MSM corporate idiots who have participated in the TACO propaganda and gaslighting to destabilize our country.
I disagree. The BIGGEST problem with Schumer and Jeffries (and most of the old guard Democratic "leadership") is that they do not have an agenda that will restore economic opportunity to the mass of people in this country. They are faithful servants of their wealthy donors. People now recognize that and that is why there was a big vote for someone who promised to break the status quo.
Schumer and Jeffries as faithful servants of their wealthy donors. How so? Please explain in detail, with concrete examples, as I’ve heard this so many times, but must not be in the loop, as I’m unaware of this and probably need to know more. So, please dish.
The most obvious example, they unconditionally support sending money and bombs to support Israel's genocide in Gaza despite the fact that their constituents oppose this. They get big campaign donations from AIPAC and know that if they don't unconditionally support Israel AIPAC will fund a primary candidate against them. Booker's biggest donor is AIPAC. Other examples, Obama bailed out the banks but not the people with underwater mortgages. They have been timid in breaking up monopolies and raising the minimum wage, both strongly opposed by their big campaign donors. Their support for unions has also been very limited. Etc.
Agree with comments about corporate dems being complacent. Believe me, at my age and witnessing the consequences of the repugnant magat/ republican destructive anti democratic agenda, I am no longer a moderate, but mad as h@ll about the fascist regime installing incompetent nitwits to rip up democracy. It’s time for all hands on deck, single minded focus to remove the TACO stain and his bootlickers. The nitpicking about certain people ( dems) we don’t like can come after we accomplish our mission-to unelect as many republicans as possible out of power.
I think the question is can we defeat the Repulsicans with candidates that don't stand for much more than "we're not Trump." I think we can win with candidates with a strong platform for economic justice, e.g., raise the minimum wage to a living wage, support unions, medicare for all, and TAX THE FUCKING RICH like we did in the 50s when America was great.
DUMP AND IMPEACH TRAITOR , NAZIS , FELONS, PREDATORS ,AND CON REPUBLICONS EVERYWHERE. YES CON REPUBLICONS, CLIMATE CHANGE IS DANGEROUS, REAL, DISRUPTIVE WORLDWIDE, COSTLY, AND PREVENTABLE. STOP DENYING CLIMATE CHANGE AND FACE THE SCIENCE . DUMP THE CON RTRUMP AND CRONIES. DEPORT RTRUMP'S WIFE AND RELATIVES. BOYCOTT NAZI MUSK AND NAZI RTRUMP. VOTE FOR DEMOCRACY FOR A FAIR DEAL, NOT THE RAW DEAL.
Aligning with NEWSOM , which I am cautiously for, at least for now, doesn’t mean he will make the Final Cut. I give him all the credit in the world for standing up to T, however, conversely, I was just as displeased with his positions a couple weeks ago on restricting trans athletes competing in sports (less than 1/2%) and his questionable podcast guests and subsequent temporary cave in to their positions. I hold my final judgment until a little later in the game.
That’s fair and those are the same reasons i was not all in myself. I do love how he is making his point of the hypocrisy of the right. I like how he has said he will redistrict his state to counteract Texas. We need someone who isn’t afraid to stand up to the republicans and so far it’s Newsom.
Mike- if you take his running for Prez off the table (whether he is or not) what he has done is give hope to those on the left. And if you add back a potential prez bid, as we’ve seen, policy plays out in real time. We know what he’s for: a democratic process, equality for all, a healthy environment. Policy will play out after the election. We just need to get to FAIR first.
As a Californian I love what he’s doing. NO ONE is perfect especially in politics when there’s so many different views and opinions, BUT people need to vote for who has the people’s interest and I believe Newsom does!
I'm not sure I agree that Gavin's strategy is only for "extreme online Democrats." My sister, who lives in the midwest, is NOT a news junkie, and is as conservative as a Democrat can get, and she started our conversation on Saturday by saying "OMG I LOVE your Governor!" I think ALL Democrats are tired of being doormats for the GQP, and are open to anybody who's willing to bring a bazooka to a knife fight.
I have always liked Gavin Newsom. When I lived in San Francisco, I voted for him. When he was running for statewide office, I voted for him in every election.
Is he a perfect candidate? No, he is not. But he has shown more than once that he has not only the courage of his convictions, but that he has convictions as well. In 2004, he stood on the side of gay people and on the side of same-sex marriage. This is while “progressive leaders“ like Mr. Obama were backtracking on the issue of gay marriage, saying that civil unions were good enough for the likes of us. Obama was for gay marriage before he was against it. That’s documented. Obama was a lawyer and a black man. He should know separate but equal is never equal and always separate. He should know that his own parents might not have been able to get married because they were of different races.
One of the problems I have had with Democratic politicians for decades is the failure to stand up and be counted unless it is safe to do so. right now there are only two possible Democratic candidates for president that I can get behind: Newsom and Buttigieg. They seem to be the only ones that would do what I would do: speak the truth, be as concise as possible, call out lies and hypocrisy for what they are.
This may seem not relevant, but it is. Every week in my newsfeed, I receive yet another report of a Christian pastor, professional Christian, or hyper conservative Republican who is also probably a Christian getting arrested, convicted, or sentence for sex crimes, usually against children, often against women, occasionally against men. And for virtually every one of these articles, four or five nearly every week,I have written to the reporter or the news team responsible, urging them to do an expose on the subject, similar to the spotlight series from the Boston Globe on literal centuries of priestly child molestation and church hierarchy coverups of same. As a gay man, I am sick to death of so-called moral authorities blaming LGBT people for the sexual abuse of children, when the reality is that the vast majority of non-family abuse cases is committed by clergy, usually of conservative denominations. There are such cases, of course, of LGBT people involved in this, but this is positively dwarfed by the sheer number of professional Christians.
And yet, I have only heard back from these reporters and news teams on a couple of occasions. Are they unwilling to take on organized religion and organized hypocrisy? That seems to be the case, because there hasn’t been a story about this since the Houston Chronicle’s stories about the southern Baptists, “abuse of Faith”.
In Short, actual courage, actual willingness to stand up and speak the truth, seems to be severely lacking in this, the bestest country in the whole wide world. What I like about Newsom is that he is willing to stand up for something. What I like about Mayor Pete is that he is always willing to speak clearly and forcefully. What I don’t like about most Democratic politicians is that so few of them are willing to stand up and be counted.
I don’t consider myself either a liberal or conservative. I believe the government should live within its means. I don’t like corporate welfare or bloated military budgets. That makes me a conservative, at least in theory. I believe the government should stay out of people sex lives and personal choices. That makes me a liberal. I believe that government‘s main function is to make life better for everyone. that makes me a progressive.
But what I believe above everything is that it is a leader's duty to lead in a manner that makes life better for everyone in the country, and not pander to narrow interests, whether religious or monetary. I vote Democratic not because I am in love with the Democratic Party, but because the Republican Party has been at war against me and mine for 45 years, and at war against the best interests of this country.
I vote Democratic by default. There is no one else to vote for.
Sorry Mike, I don’t agree with several points you make. Newsom’s message is reaching beyond just the online crowd. And no matter what he does, or anyone else for that matter, it won’t reach those that simply don’t pay attention. And the median voters in the battleground states that decide elections are, unfortunately, made up of a fair amount of people that aren’t paying attention or are not educated on exactly what is happening in this country right now.
And Newsom’s strategy will work for any democrat. Because the strategy is pushing back against the unconstitutional and illegal shit this administration does every day. Every single Democrat should be doing that, regardless of where they are.
Yea, he’s throwing in some mocking tweets, and not for comedic effect. He’s just as tired of all the bullshit as everyone else, and two can play that game. Democratic strategy from 10 years ago doesn’t play anymore.
It really helps when the people you appoint are competent.
But no worries yet. You bring up a good point. But they had to get everybody’s attention first. And they succeeded with flying colors. Let’s see where they go from here.
I have not been a fan of Gov. Newsom, but he does have a strong policy platform for the moment. He’s in a bare knuckled fight, punch for punch, with a wanna-be autocrat to preserve our democratic principles. That will rally Americans who are sick of “Do Nothing Democrats” and not just those who are on-line. I hazard a guess that your friends who are not aware of him are low information voters who don’t keep themselves apprised of the current dangerous political environment and don’t participate in their own governance. They’re waiting to be saved, rather than doing the work that is required of all of us.
Typical democrat intellectualizing for a country that currently loves politicians who want to get in the ring and duke it out. Newsom is, after all, the governor of the fourth largest economy in the world. If we had a state militia, we’d kick the Feds out. It’s about time California punched with its full weight. The US would be the size of the Russian economy without California, but with less oil. Maybe we do need a re-think of the structure of our republic. It’s not serving California at all.
I'm not disagreeing with your overall point - that we need a variety of strategies, that Newsom isn't inevitable - but I think you're a little bit falling into the status quo trap. Donald Trump (and his message) have dominated the online space. A lot of that can be due to big money financing a lot of online platforms, and the biggest social media sites are tilted to favor him.
But if you want to engage younger people, you have to meet them where they are - online. You have to speak their language. Continuing to cater our message to upper-middle class white people in their 60s and 70s is not a winning strategy.
I understand your point that the shock and banter from Gavin won’t play with every gentrified voter. However, the point is to inject some energy into the democratic movement and counterpunch the absurdness coming out of the far right MAGA lunatics. We are far removed from 2028 campaigning and there is time to define and address the issues and campaign positions ahead. Clearly, no one paid attention to Trump’s agenda or they would have understood the core of Project 2025 and second thought pulling the lever to install this regime. I blame the media for not making a bigger expose’ on Project 2025 and focusing the coverage on “personalities” rather than positions. Gavin is a legitimate contender for 2028 but will need to balance his ticket with moderate voices to capture the middle. It can be done. What he and his team are doing now is squarely putting him in the conversation.
I listened to half of your substack post last night before I turned you off. I have never been a fan of Gavin Newson but after listening to Heather Cox Richardson's interview with the Govenor I felt a tremendous relief. We finally have a democrate that knows how to fight fire with fire. We finally have a potential democratic candidate for President who recognizes that the moment is now and thankfully doing all he can to save our democracy. I turned you off after hearing you say for the 20th time (I'm exagerating) how much you dislike the California Govenor, how shallow he is and haven't any idea what he stands for. Thankfully your opinion post today is more reflective and for me right on point.
