The Democratic party has to stay super focused on 2 or 3 core issues. We have to take the time to get everyone on the Democratic platform and pull in independent voters
As an old Hospice nurse I can tell you, it's important to tell people I can do the top 3 things on your list...not everything...but guaranteed I will work hard for you and stay lazer focused on your top 3 needs/wants. If Democrats in NYC and elsewhere get that REAL about it...they will make a real splash. Love how Mandami did this...so far
Zohran is more than a good politician at the right time. He is genuine and able to speak and act with integrity, which is what sells his platform to voters. Democratic Party will still TRY to ignore this race and double down on picking who the establishment wants and attempt to sabotage progressive candidates.
Although I barely came to know about him, his personality is attractive, he seems truthful and his agenda is simple, “to resolve NY’s issues”. People are not dumb they can assess candidates and the vote on party lines has destroyed America.
I see a huge danger and some wishful thinking in the people who today are trying to find a "larger message for Democrats" in Mamdani's win. It probably DOESN'T have a valuable "larger message," because the circumstances were unique. Andrew Cuomo is singularly appalling and I think people became more aware of that as the campaign continued. He's just a disgusting person. I also don't think making shiny, pie-in-the-sky promises that are largely undeliverable is a good strategy for Democrats because we've seen how quickly voters on the left decide to sit out because "I didn't get MY college debt forgiven" or "the ACA didn't go far enough." I've heard those "Why didn't we get our pony?" complaints in election after election to explain why some voters just "couldn't" vote.
We will see what happens with Mr. Zohran but when I read his background he is not who everyone thinks he is: A puppet of the liberal left. While he follows the Islamic faith, he is from Southeast Asia not from the middle east. He probably has a more nuanced view of the middle east situation than he would have had if he was raised in the middle east. I hope I am correct in this.
I'm not convinced his background is all that relevant in the nuts and bolts of running a complex city. For instance, he's clearly an anti-Semite who doesn't comprehend what certain expressions mean to Jews nor does he care. But I don't think it matters. What matters is his ability to contain housing and other day-to-day costs as he's sweepingly promised. Even an Orthodox rabbi would probably put that ahead of his personal beliefs.
I do not understand what certain expressions mean to Jews AND I HAVE JEWISH ANCESTORS. Of course it turns out not all of my ancestors are Jewish, Oh Vey!!! The question for me is does he support the state of Israel or not? I do not know, it is not important to his job of course but it still would be interesting to know.
Sadly, no one pointed out that he was behind SJP, never once decried THE BIG LIE, when signs immediately went up on campuses and everywhere that Israel was committing genocide, when there were 2.5 million people in Gaza, and counting after October7th. There is much more around all of this, but the real danger is he remained silent, complicit, and ultimately doesn't care about the hate that was built around THE BIG LIE. Our schools are quieter at the moment but violent protests and acts against Jewish students and beyond may very well ramp up. What is happening in Gaza today could have ended long ago, if Hamas and their Charter was renounced and denounced, along with Jihadists by any name, and the Nation States that support them, by the Palestinians. A willingness to resist terrorism as the world was watching. And just want to add, never once since October 7th has there been any expression of horror at what took place, what continues to take place...to my mind care and concern is a two-way street...including where Mr. Mamdani is concerned.
Everyone is talking about Zohran’s so called massive victory. If was not a lot of people considering there are over 250 million people in the USA. Also Zohran is from Southeast Asia so you cannot assume that he has the same views as someone from the Middle East might have even though they both follow the Islamic faith. He can speak for himself but I just wanted to point out that people of Islamic faith do not just reside in Arab countries, there is a huge population of people who follow the Islamic faith in Asia and they do not always agree with the people who follow the Islamic faith who live in the Middle East.
This situation is reminiscent of the Washington movement in Chicago in the 1980s. Then it was the machine v. progressive Dem coalition. Here it is the "establishment" v. the progressives. Based on that we can expect the establishment to go all out against Mamdani---a street fight now. And we can also expect the establishment and monied interests to do everything to undermine a Mamdani administration. Supporters have to be prepared to hang in for the long haul and to keep up the organizing.
Mike Nellis has told us all he needs to in his byline: Mike Nellis is a Democratic strategist and entrepreneur who has raised over $1 billion for Democratic campaigns and causes. He’s the founder of Authentic.org, an award-winning fundraising and advertising agency, and a former Senior Advisor to Vice President Kamala Harris.
He is literally the problem, giving us the fascist state we now have via Donald Trump. It is thanks to the neo-liberal, corporate Democrats like him that we are in the place we are now. Trump is only a vehicle driven by both corporate parties who care nothing for the overwhelming majority of people in this country as they have proven over and over and over again. Mamdani and his agenda is what this country really needs as an actual revolution, not the BS of Clinton and Obama, the same-old same-old empty talk with no structural changes except furthering the interests of capital.

Affordability has to be #1 in that

Institutional knowledge.
This conversation is just a waste of time. Maybe take some notes from Zeteo (Mehdi Hassan) or Lever
Ugh ... You couldn't find someone more articulate about populist politics? Adam Schiff is AWFUL. yawn
Your guest (and much of the thrust of this conversation) has an inherent blind spot.
