Voters just handed Democrats a historic mandate, and the last thing we need is a party too afraid to use it. I spent most of yesterday bouncing from one media hit to the next, and I swear I heard the same question in almost every one. After Tuesday’s historic night for Democrats, anchors and pundits kept leaning in with the same furrowed brow: Aren’t you worried Democrats are going to overreach?
I had to laugh. Because I don’t remember a single person in the media asking Donald Trump and the Republican Party whether they were worried about overreaching after 2024. Not one.
In fact, I remember the opposite. I remember the press buying into a big lie: that Donald Trump won the 2024 election with a mandate. He didn’t. It was an incredibly close election. If roughly 100,000 votes go differently across a handful of states, Kamala Harris is president right now. That’s not a mandate. That’s a coin flip that landed on its edge.
Now look at this week. Democrats just had their best midterm since 1974. We flipped as many as nine Senate seats. We flipped Texas. Texas!
That is a mandate. And we earned it.
We earned it by nominating incredible candidates who rose above a bad party brand. They focused on the issues the American people told us mattered, they listened, and they were responsive. And voters were not subtle about what they wanted. Fix the economy, because everything costs too much and the job market sucks. End this war. Get rid of these tariffs. And go after the corruption that has rotted our government from the inside out.
So let’s be clear about what overreach would actually look like. If Democrats walk in on day one, act like we’re popular, and then say, “We’re impeaching Donald Trump,” that would be an extraordinary waste of time. Nobody voted for a political sideshow.
But that’s not the choice in front of us, and the media knows it. What the American people want is for Democrats to call corruption and greed in Washington what they are: an affordability issue. Every dollar skimmed off the top by the people running this government is a dollar coming out of your pocket.
Take Elon Musk. The richest man in the world spent a fortune to buy his way into the government, then helped himself to the American taxpayer while gutting programs working families rely on. And he’s not alone. There’s Trump and his family’s crypto schemes, Jared Kushner’s investment fund, and the bribes people like Tom Homan and Alina Habba are taking. It’s a whole administration treating the government like a cash register.
Expose it. Investigate it. Follow it with real legal action and prosecute these people to the fullest extent of the law. Then pass serious ethics and campaign finance reform. Start in the first week with a ban on insider trading in Congress and the White House. Make it bipartisan. Any Republican who claims to care about corruption can prove it with their vote, and Democrats should be just as eager to throw out the corrupt assholes in our own party. Then dare Donald Trump to veto it.
That’s not overreach. That’s the job. That’s literally what the American people elected us to do. I’m tired of Democrats being held to a standard Republicans have never had to meet. That doesn’t mean abandoning our principles or breaking the rules to get things done. It means playing the game, playing it hard, and actually using our power to make people’s lives better.
And if you think I’m spinning, go back and look at what voters said after 2024. In focus groups and in polling, the message was the same over and over: Democrats mean well, but they can’t get anything done. They’re not fighting for me. They’re fighting for somebody else.
Winning elections means nothing if the people we elect refuse to deliver. Endless Urgency is here to call out corruption, challenge the political establishment, and demand accountability from those in power, regardless of party. This work matters, and keeping it independent matters even more. Help us keep these conversations free and accessible to everyone for just $8/month:
I didn’t see one word about overreach in any of the voter feedback I read. People weren’t mad that we did too much. They were pissed that we didn’t do enough. Pissed that we didn’t transform the country. Pissed that we were focused on the wrong things. Pissed we didn’t deliver on what we campaigned on.
So the time to deliver is now. This is a generational opportunity, and we cannot waste it being afraid of our own shadow.
Yes, Republicans will hide behind the filibuster. Yes, Donald Trump will veto a lot of bills. Fine. Make them own every vote. Make Trump own every veto. Then send this new crop of young, sharp, media-savvy Democrats across the country to tell people exactly who is standing between them and a better life. Ask voters for more Democratic senators, more Democrats in the House, and a Democratic president in 2028.
And shut out the noise. The Republicans and their MAGA media machine are going to scream about “lawfare.” It’s so unfair! They’re coming after America’s favorite president! Ignore them. Nobody cares. People want criminals investigated, exposed, and prosecuted, whether they’re in the Epstein class, the Trump family, or the billionaire class.
And when the media decides we’re “going too far,” when they start parroting Republican talking points the way they did all day yesterday, tune them out. Stand on business. Stand on our values. That’s what most Democrats did in this midterm, and it worked.
Deliver immediate, tangible improvements to the material conditions of people’s lives. Take this country back from the corrupt cabal of genuinely evil people who have been abusing it and profiting off of it for far too long.
Voters already told us what they want. They didn’t hand us this majority so we could be careful with it. They handed it to us so we’d finally use it.
Deliver. That’s the whole strategy.
With urgency,
—Mike
