I viewed it tonight (2/25) after last night watching fifty minutes of SOTU and then not being able to stomach it any more. The two of you together are great. It's my first exposure to Rosenberg, and he and you together had me smiling and chortling throughout the time. After three years of dragging my ass through the muck of Trump's re-rise from the ashes, the increasingly brighter lights that Rosenberg brought tonight and that you echoed were really heartening. Then, on the Sunday much longer puzzles that have a theme appear and are roughly the same difficulty level as Thursday puzzles. Sunday puzzles are often the most fun. Over the years all of the puzzles have gotten easier, which I think is in keeping with what has happened to the American population.

After two Medals of Honor, one Purple Heart, and one Medal of Freedom were handed out by emcee Donnie "The Chump" Trump, I was waiting for him to start handing out Oscars for Best Picture ("Melania" in a landslide). I assumed that would win Best Picture, Best Documentary, Best Actress (Melania in a rout!), Best Foreign Language Accent Film -- Featuring Melania's Accent), and finally Best Husband of a Woman Featured in a Ridiculous, Overpriced Farce Financed by a Bootlicking Billionaire Looking for Favors From a Fascist Dictator (Donald Trump in another record-breaking landslide). Yes, that is my favorite all-time Oscar category. Thank goodness for human-being-hating Jeff Bezos for ensuring that such a fantastic example of the absolute pinnacle of film art made it into our national consciousness.
My two favorite moments in the speech, otherwise known as "uncontrolled sewage spewage" were when Trump looked at Democrats and exclaimed, "These people are crazy!" Surely, that was the most eloquent expression ever utterly by a president during a SOTU speech. The second high point was when the speech was over and Trump passed the Chief Justice and other justices. Elena Kagan seemed to position herself in such a way that the Creep-in-Chief wouldn't touch her. She did not extend her hand the way both Kavanaugh and Barrett did after Trump had passed Kagan. But what was so special about that moment was the existence of another woman whose identity I don't know, but whose body language and positioning were exquisitely designed to prevent any physical contact with Trump. She looked to me genuinely alarmed that contact might happen whether accidentally or by design. She escaped unscahed.
Thus, the longest, most unhinged, most Trumpian SOTU speech in history came to an end only to be described in glowing terms by the groaty toadies who inhabit the GOP. Everyone's favorite senator, Ted Cruz called it "majestic." Little Mikey "Bobble Head" Johnson called it the best SOTU he has seen. Alabama senator Katie Britt, whose own SOTU response speech was one for the ages (the dark ages!), called it, "The strongest State of the Union speech in modern history," which to a Republican usually means some time between 1300 and 1500, you know, the time they hope to return this country to.

2. Undergoing open heart surgery performed by an auto mechanic who didn't wash his hands.
3. Performing a space walk without a space suit or oxygen.
4. Driving an EV from New York City to London, England.

I just heard Simon Rosenberg on Greg Sargent's podcast today, after SOTU, and he sounds completely different - very cautious and not at all sold that 2026 will be a cakewalk. He says repeatedly there that Trump won in 2024 after terrible polling throughout 2023, and his party could do it again.
In this interview, Rosenberg is really on hopium (the name of his own outlet) if he thinks Trump will resign over Epstein, or over anything. There is no chance, no matter what they find, that he will do this.
I like these guys, but I am not sure of the utility of these daily Substacks constantly saying the same thing about November? And also, does anyone honestly believe Schumer and Jeffries are the right leaders for this moment?
I don't know, I think supporting genocide and providing the 'leadership' that led to trump and the GOP taking over the government are both automatic dealbreakers, among many other reasons.
